REFLECTION This reflection is based on an event that occurred during teaching a


science lesson to Year 5 students.

During my lesson, I scanned the room to ensure students understood the


instructions on their science investigations on refraction light. However, I
noticed that one student in the class showed a negative body language
reaction to the instructions. Keeping it noted, I explained again while
walking around the room to ensure that all students understood the task
and observing any changes to the student reaction. The student left the
classroom and slammed the door behind him. I went outside to ensure
that I had a clear view of the student who left, and I also had my back
turned towards the door frame so the reminder of the class was also in my
view.

The student was on the top of the staircase. Still positioning my body to
have a view on both the class and the student outside, I used a calm
voice, lowered my body down to the student’s level and asked if they could
explain to me what has happened. The student explained why they
decided to leave the classroom, however the language used included a
swear word. I told the student to use student language and to try and
explain again without swearing. The student was able to explain their
feelings and the situation again in a calm manner. I explained that they
need to come inside and is able to remove themself in a spot in the
classroom to calm down for five minutes. The student agreed and moved
to another area within the classroom. I continued to guide and help the
students participating in the science lesson. After five minutes, I went to
check on the student to invite back to join the lesson. The student agreed
and remained calm throughout the remainder of the lesson.

After the lesson, I discussed this challenging behaviour with my mentor


teacher. She explained I did a very good job at handling the situation and
that using the strategy of removing the student to calm before joining
again is something that she personally uses, but did not tell me about it as
of yet. We discussed further if the situation was different and how I would
approach it. For example, if the student had left my view and I still had a
whole class at their desks. I understand the school procedure to call
administration to make them aware of the student who had left.
Additionally, if the student had used swearing directly at me in an
aggressive manner, that would result in using the school wide behaviour
management system of RTC reflection at lunch time and a One School
minor behaviour report. Also, if the student was unable to explain again
without swearing, again would result in a RTC reflection and One School
minor behaviour report.
