O&M Practices for Maximum Engine Life

The life of an engine is influenced by many factors.

However, by controlling the major systems with routine
low cost maintenance practices, the downtime and
repair costs can be reduced to a minimum.
Design changes are constantly being made to
improve engine life, however, the full benefit cannot be
obtained unless all factors which shorten engine life are
controlled.
Checks Before Engine Start Up (Daily)
A = Air ventilation and Air Filter restriction
B = Battery condition and distilled water level
C = Coolant level and Pressure Cap
D = Diesel fuel level - open supply/outlet valves
- drain water/sediment from tank
E = Engine/Lube Oil level - near to ‘H’ (High) mark
F = Fan and Belt condition
G = General inspection on External Damages/Leaks

Checks During Engine Operation
• Air Filter restriction at High Idle or Rated Speed
• Unusual Speed, Noise and Vibration
• Coolant temperature and pressure
• Oil pressure and temperature
• Engine power output & smoke level/ color.
• Fan and Belt condition
• General inspection on Leaks
(Oil, Coolant, Fuel)
Checks Before Engine Shut Down

• Remove load and run at Idle speed for 2-3 mins.

(to reduce the heat in the engine and continue to
provide lubrication to fast moving parts e.g. turbo)
• Coolant temperature and pressure
• Oil pressure and temperature STOP

• Engine smoke level/ color

• Fan and Belt condition
• General inspection on Leaks
(Oil, Coolant, Fuel)
