POLIOMYELITIS

Infantile Paralysis is an old synonym for poliomyelitis, an acute and sometimes devastating viral
disease.

CAUSATIVE ORGANISM: Picorna Viridae + ssRNA virus

ROUTE OF ENTRY: Fecal-oral route

SYMPTOMS:

1. Limbs and hands do not grow

2. Withered legs

3. Diarrhea

4. Vomiting

5. Fever

PATHOGENESIS:

Once ingested virus multiplies in mucosa

Invades tonsils and lymph nodes

Leads to viremia

99% no onset

1% viremia persists and enters CNS


Virus has a high affinity to anterior horn motor cells of the spinal cord

Enters inside and multiplies

More paralysis Muscular pain

DIAGNOSIS:

No diagnosis but doctor should be able to predict seeing the symptoms.

TREATMENT:

Vaccines like inactivated polio virus and sabin, Oral vaccines : attenuated live vaccines and
booster doses. Polio vaccine is freely provided to everyone and all the children must
compulsorily take polio vaccine.
