Biochemistryn 1
Biochemistryn 1
Course description:
This course is designed to give basics on biochemistry and cover the chemical and physical properties of
some macromolecules that include carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. Bioenergetics and oxidative
phosphorylations will be covered with special focus on dietary nutrients metabolism. This course will
also cover the unique physical and chemical properties of water, the use of water as a universal solvent
in biological systems and the buffer properties of water. In addition, the correlation between the
structural components of the biological membranes, enzymes, globular and fibrous proteins and their
function is discussed.
B. Subject-specific skills
B1. Problem solving skills:
Be able to calculate the pH of the biological media, and the concentration of the protons.
B2. Application of Methods and Tools:
Be able to draw the polypeptide from its basic structure of the amino acids, know its PI in
specific pH, and predict the net charge of the polypeptide.
C. Critical-Thinking Skills
C1. Analytic skills: Assess
Predict the charge of a polypeptide in certain biological pH and correlate it to its buffer properties.
D. General and Transferable Skills (other skills relevant to employability and personal development)
D1. Communication:
1. The ability to work independently, and as part of a team.
2. Developing the skills necessary for self-managed and lifelong learning (e.g. working independently,
time management and organization skills)
3. Using the internet and other electronic sources critically, as sources of information and means of
communication
D2. Teamwork and Leadership:
Developing an adaptable, flexible, and effective approach to study and work in teams
