What depression truly feels like

If anyone reading this believe depression is a continuous problem with similar symptoms,

you could not be more wrong. Depression is one of the most common afflictions in today's

society; the American Psychiatric Association (APA, 2017) describes this affliction as “a

common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and

how you act.”

Emotions at this stage are wild and irrational; during depression it's not uncommon to

feel happy. Contrary to common belief depression is filled erratic feelings, one gets to love many

aspects of life while being depressed, and still be happy. People are not limited to be openly sad,

depression is more of an internal situation.

With the different misconceptions surrounding the affliction, it's important to state a

parameter of sorts to what normally happens. One of the most common wrong ideas is that

during this illness one mostly feels sadness, although this can be the case, it's more than often

wrong, while sadness is a part of it it's still far from the main felling. Truthfully one mostly feels

“nothingness” just an un interest in what is happening around them. After a while they might

even forget what it feels like to feel, leaving them unable to know how to respond to things that

happen each day.

It's not weird, for people who are struggling with depression talk about their life as if they

are living in a kind of dream state where everything feels meaningless and surreal. “Every

minute of every day was lived as if I was almost at the point of drowning. The point after you’ve

stopped struggling and you’re just lying there, watching the rest of the world as your lungs fill

with water and the water envelopes you and you think ‘I don’t belong here anymore.”
When dealing with depression you really appreciate all the support people daunt to you,

yet you feel unworthy, even completely incapable of expressing a simple thank you to any and

all. It is not weird to experience companionship you can even say it’s obvious to some that is

sick that they are loved and supported. But even after all that you never feel worthy.

Depression can and may be treated by taking antidepressants, yet even after getting

“cured you feel uneasy as if at any moment you may once again fall victim.
