PART NO. 897817 2200 SAM 590SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR
When lifting parts or assemblies, make sure that all slings, chains or cables
are correctly fastened and that the load being lifted is balanced. Make sure
that the crane, cables and chains have the capacity to support the weight of
the load.
Do not lift heavy parts by hand. Use a lifting mechanism,
Wear safety glasses.
DISCONNECT THE BATTERY CONNECTOR before doing any
maintenance or repair on electric lift trucks. Disconnect the battery ground
cable on intemal combustion lift trucks.
Always use correct blocks to prevent the unit from rolling or falling. See
“How To Put The Lift Truck On Blocks” in the OPERATING MANUAL or
the PERIODIC MAINTENANCE section.
Keep the unit and working area clean and in order.
Use the correct tools for the job.
Keep the tools clean and in good condition.
Always use HYSTER APPROVED parts when making repairs.
Replacement parts must meet or exceed the specifications of the original
‘equipment manufacturer.
Make sure that all nuts, bolts, snap rings and other fastening devices are
removed before using force to remove parts.
Always fasten a DO NOT OPERATE sign to the controls of the unit when
making repairs or if the unit needs repairs.
Make sure you follow the DANGER, WARNING and CAUTION notes in
the instructions.
Gasoline, Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG), and Diesel are flammable fuels.
Make sure that you follow the necessary safety precautions when handling
these fuels and when working on these fuel systen
Batteries generate flammable gas when they are being charged. Keep fire and
sparks away from the area, Make sure the area has ventilation,CONTENTS

GENERAL
NOTE: The words “wire guidance”
this section describes the system of automatically
steering the lift truck. Also the guidance sensors will
be referred to as (front sensor) and (rear sensor). The
front sensor is mounted on the drive axle and the rear
sensor is mounted on the steering cylinder.

FIGURE I. WIRE GUIDANCE SYSTEM
‘The lift truck has the following guidance parts: (1) sen-
sors at the front and rear of the lift truck, (2) an Elec-
tronic Control Module (ECM), (3) a gearmotor and
pump, (4) a steering potentiometer, (5) a guidance
switch, with light, and alarm on the instrument panel
for operator control of the system, and (6) hydraulic
control valves.
See FIGURE I. for reference to the wire guidance op-
crating. part
This section has the description, checks and adjustment
test procedures for the parts of the wire guidance sys-
tem. When the guidance system is in operation, the
system will automatically control the steering,
See the section STEERING SYSTEM FOR ELEC-
TRIC LIFT TRUCKS, (1600 SRM_ 485), and
STEERING HOUSING AND STEERING CON-
‘TROL UNFIT, (1600 SRM 512) for the steering parts
of the guidance system. All mechanical pars of the
steering must be in good condition and correctly ad-
justed for correct guidance operation.
‘The wire guidance system automatically steers the lift
truck. The system senses a magnetic field trom the
guide wire buried in the floor. A wire driver generates,
the signal carried by the guide wire. The wire driver is
part of the location installation and operates on AC
power. See the WIRE DRIVER MANUAL, 599565,
for more information on the wire drivers.
When the lift truck is following the guide wire, both
front and rear sensors are directly over the guide wire.
‘The sensors sense the signal from the guide wire and
send signals to the ECM. The ECM controls the gear-
‘motor as indicated by the input signal from the steering
potentiometer. The gearmotor turns the guidance steer
control unit for steering. The steering potentiometer
sends a signal to the ECM that the steer axle has turned
in the correct direction and the correct amount. The
automatic shut-off circuit of the ECM will decrease
the lift truck speed if the signal becomes weak and stop
the lift truck if the guidance system cannot sense the
signal from the guide wire, The shut-off circuit will
also stop the lift truck if there is a malfunction of some
steering component. The guidance switch on the i
strument panel provides the operator with control of
the guidance system. A light in the guidance switch
and an alarm indicate guidance system operation. The
steering wheel is used for manual steering.
Each sensor is fastened to a bracket located near the
floor. The front sensor bracket is mounted in the center
of the axle, The rear sensor is mounted on the steer cyl-
inder. The ECM is mounted on the right side of the
‘mast just in front of the operator. The alarm and theguidance switch are mounted in the instrument panel
to left of the steering wheel.
OPERATION
NOTE: The guidance system must have a signal from
the wire driver of the correct amplitude and frequency.
‘The standard frequency is 6240 to 6260 Hz. with a wire
current of 76 to 80 ma. The frequency and the wire
current can each be different for each installation.
Make sure the frequency and wire current from the
wire driver is correct for the sensors on the lift truck.
See the labels on the sensors. The Hyster wire driver
has the frequency and wire current on a label inside the
door. See the manufacturer for other wire drivers.
‘The wire guidance system controls the steering system
to steer the lft truck along the guide wire. The operator
activates the guidance system by pushing the Guidance
switch to the ON position. The guidance system can be
activated or deactivated at any time, by pushing the
switch. The operator must steer the lift truck close
‘enough to the wire for the system to sense the signal. If
the lift truck is in a position so that the system senses
the signal and the guidance system has been activated,
the system will automatically find the guide wire.
J) oinection oF TRAVEL
‘Manual steering is possible when the guidance system
is activated if the system cannot sense a signal. The
alarm and flashing light will both operate during this
condition. The guidance system will steer the truck au-
tomatically when the system is activated and the sen-
sors cant sense a signal, The alarm will stop operating
and the flashing light will be continuously illuminated
after the lift truck is following the guide wire. The
alarm and flashing light will again operate if the guid-
ance system loses the signal. The system will first slow
the lift truck in two stages to try to sense the signal. If
the guide wire signal cannot be sensed, the system will
stop the lift truck and allow the brake to engage.
‘The ECM receives signals from the system sensors and
from the steering potentiometer. The ECM uses the in-
put signals to keep the lift truck following the path of
the wire. An input from the steering potentiometer
tells the ECM the direction and amount of steering that
occurs.
In the manual steering mode, the steering is done with
the steering wheel. In the automatic steering mode
(wire guidance), the steering input signals come from
the sensors. During normal guidance operation, the
centerline of the lift truck is over the guide wire.
