Pigments ( The Basis of Watercolor Paint )

Watercolor paints are the least important aspect of watercolor. Technically the artist isn’t even
working with paint like in other mediums, but directly with pigment and water. Watercolor paint
is generally made from Binders and other additives. To this is added a variety of raw pigments,
which are substances ground into a fine powder that carry the color used in paint. These
range from natural earths and Lapis Lazuli, to modern chemicals like the Quinacridones. Once
deposited on the page, the pigments are exposed directly to the pollution and UV light which if
they aren’t chemically inert can lead to fading. The pigment used is the most important factor in
whether a given paint is lightfast, but also determines how it behaves.

Binder ( Gum Arabic ) Dispersant ( Ox Gall )

Gum Arabic is the main binder for watercolor A dispersant controls how well the pigment

Purple It is important to remember with green that

Blue it actually is constantly varied in nature and
Base Green you should also constantly vary it using other
colors. This illustrates mixing my base green (
Yellow which here is Benzimida Yellow PY154 mixed with
Red Phthalo Green PG7 and a touch of Perelene Maroon
Orange PR179 ) with all the other primary and secondary colors
around the color wheel.
The single pigment greens tend to be unnatural, so you
really have to mix things a bit to get a good starting
green, or just use a convenience mix like Sap Green.
