STUDENT MODULE IN
TECHNOLOGY FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING 1

Instructor: VERONICA B. CUNANAN

WEEK 1 CONCEPTS ABOUT EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY

I. OVERVIEW

Encouraging and supporting academic staff to

make use of technology in their teaching practice is a
challenge, particularly in an institution that considers
itself to be research-intensive. Helping people and
children learn in ways that are easier, faster, more
accurate, or less expensive can be traced back to the
emergence of very early tools, such as paintings on cave
walls. Various types of abacus have been used. Writing
slates and blackboards have been used for at least a
millennium. Books and pamphlets have held a
prominent role in education. Educational institutions
began to take advantage of the new medium by offering
distance learning courses using computer networking
for information. Early e-learning systems, based on computer-based learning/ training often replicated autocratic
teaching styles whereby the role of the e-learning system was assumed to be for transferring knowledge, as
opposed to systems developed later based on computer supported collaborative learning which encouraged the
shared development of knowledge.
Students growing up in this digital age have extensive exposure to a variety of media. Major high-tech
companies have funded schools to provide them the ability to teach their students through technology. Currently,
due to Coronavirus outbreak many schools are closed and more and more students are enrolling in online courses
to enforce distant learning.
This paper gives a brief overview of the concepts related to educational technology, how to write a
paragraph, illustrating the teacher as a highly promising technology and establish the roles of educational
technology in the 21st Century Classroom.

II. LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course you will be able to;

1. Define the concepts that are related to educational technology.
2. Write a paragraph to illustrate the teacher as a highly promising technology.
3. Establish the roles of educational technology in the 21 st century classroom.
III. DISCUSSION AND SELF ACTIVITIES ASSESSMENT (SAA)

A. Let’s Ponder

Mr. Adriano, the teacher of the freshmen students went to

the teacher’s lounge and used her own laptop to surf on
the computer to look for the topics he gave to his students
in English. He would like to check the assignments to be
submitted by the students.
It seems that every learner and teacher are users of
technology. Educators are aware that technology is here to
stay and be useful tools in enhancing teaching-learning
activities.

 Have you observed the same during your previous years in class?
 What are the implications of using technology in the learning process?
 Is/ Are there any negative impacts on the teachers? Learners? The use of technology?

B. Let’s Engage

DIFFERENT CONCEPTS OF TECHNOLOGY

 Technology as the gadgets, tools, or equipment to perform a task expediently and

efficiently.
It is the knowing, making, modifying, and using of tools, machines, techniques, crafts, systems,
and methods of organization, in order to solve problem, improve a pre-existing solution to a problem,
achieve a goal, handle an applied input/output relation or perform a specific function.
 Technology as the collection of tools, including machinery, modifications, arrangements
and procedures.
This refers to reliable devices that enable one to make presentations repeatedly. Teachers and
students show powerpoint presentation using the computer and LCD to enhance teaching and learning.
 Other Gadgets as Technology
Some people need to use gadgets or tools to perform home chores faster like washing machine,
rice cooker, hair blower, electric fan, floor polisher, electric food mixers, blenders, and grinders. Other
technology-related appliances are radio, television, music player, and digital camera.
 The Teacher as a Technology
The teacher facilitates learning through the use of varied instructional materials like books, the
blackboard, magazines, newspaper, library materials and visual aids. The teacher uses gadgets and tools
to make learning fast, efficient, and effective.
 TASK 1: THE TEACHER AS A PROMISING TECHNOLOGY

As a technology, what do teachers use to facilitate learning? Classify them as visual, verbal, sound, and
manipulative.

Visual Verbal Sound Manipulative

Introducing a
new lesson

Teaching a new
lesson

Enhancing
discussions in a
new lesson

Monitoring the
students’ work

CONCEPTS OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY

 Educational technology as the selection, development, managing and use of appropriate

technological processes and resources.
 Educational Technology as the choice of appropriate principles in the preparation and utilization
of conventional and non-conventional technology tools as well as traditional and alternative teaching
strategies.

Five Domains of Educational Technology

DOMAINS DESCRIPTION

Design Establishing a framework to guide in planning the educational technology

Development Using the design of framework, materials are produced and developed.

learners. It is also known as the action phase.

Monitoring, assessing, and giving judgment on the extent of usefulness of the learning material
Evaluation
in achieving the expected outcomes.

It is applied in the implementation of all the different domains and its effect on the outcomes of
Management
learning.
 TASK 2:
This activity will allow you to express your thoughts regarding the teacher as a technology. Write
a paragraph to illustrate the teacher as highly promising technology.

IV. SUMMARY/ KEY POINTS

 What is educational technology?

Educational technology is the combined use of computer hardware, software, and educational theory and
practice to facilitate learning. This creates, uses, and manages technological processes and educational
resources to help improve user academic performance.

 What are the basic concepts of technology in education?

a. It is a continuous dynamic technology.

b. It is an important medium of communication.
c. A desired change is possible in the behavior of teachers and students.
V. END OF MODULE ASSESSMENT/ EMA

Read and Analyze each of the statements below. Write TRUE if it tells correctly as to the course subject
and FALSE if it is not. Write your answer on the space before each number.

_______________1. The gadgets which is cellphone allows communication to reach the target faster and
smoother.
_______________2. Technology as the collection of tools, including machinery, modifications, arrangements
and procedures refers to the progress in class through email, which both the teacher and
the students can readily access.
_______________3. Student gatherings in school do not make use of music players, amplifiers, digital cameras,
televisions, and microphones just to become memorable and happier.
_______________4. Verbal, sound, and manipulative technologies cater to the use of the senses to enhance
perception and grasp of knowledge among students.
_______________5. Teachers use gadgets and tools to make learning fast, efficient, and effective.
_______________6. There is no need to change from the traditional roles of technology-as-teacher to
technology-as-partner in the learning process.
_______________7. Learning environment can be any environment or definable set of activities that emerge
learners in active, constructive, intentional, and authentic learning.
_______________8. Technologies are conveyors or communicators of meaning but they can also serve as
resource materials for reflection and other thinking skills.
_______________9. Five domains of Educational Technology give one a big picture of the theories and practices
involved in applying the varied concepts that cover it.
_______________10. The focus of integration of technology will be on facilitating and enhancing the
teachinglearning episodes undertaken by both the teachers and the students.

VII. LOOKING AHEAD

Make a research about Educational Technology as the selection, development, management and use of
appropriate technological processes and resources.

VIII. SELF AND MODULE EVALUATION

How was your experience? Tell me about it.
