2 Hazardous Location Guide | KOPEX-EX™ and STAR TECK ®

Introduction to the Guide
Thomas & Betts has a wide range of products designed to be used in hazardous locations, however hazardous location product
selling can be a challenge. This guide is designed to aid in the selling of T&B hazardous location fittings and flexible conduit
systems. In this guide you will find information that will help you understand the classifications and certifications and which products
we have to suit them.

The two main product lines that this guide focuses on are Kopex-Ex™ and Star Teck®. These two product lines should be
considered complementary and give you a complete line of products to offer that terminate and protect any type of cable in
hazardous locations. We hope that this guide will be useful to you in your mission to sell into hazardous locations.

What are Hazardous locations?

The U.S. Department of Labor defines hazardous locations as those areas “where fire or explosion hazards may exist due to
flammable gases or vapors, flammable liquids, combustible dust, or ignitable fibers or flyings.” Below is a list of locations that are
considered hazardous due to the materials, gases or fluids present. This is NOT exhaustive list:

Automotive refueling stations Hospital operating rooms Gas pipelines and distribution centers
Gas stations Aircraft refueling and hangars Grain handling and storage
Oil refineries, rigs and processing plants Surface coating industries Woodworking areas
Chemical processing plants Underground coal mines Sugar refineries
Printing industries (paper and textiles) Sewage treatment plants Metal surface grinding (aluminum dusts and particles)

What is an explosion?
• An explosion is a rapid increase in volume and release of energy in an extreme manner, usually
with the generation of high temperatures and the release of gases.

• The resultant sudden increase in pressure can result in physical damage to surrounding areas
and/or total destruction of an item/site.

• An explosion can only occur if three factors are present.

World Standards and What They Mean
The aim of a hazardous area product is to minimize the risk Product Approvals

should aim to limit the effect. Across the world various
standards and codes exist to guide and regulate the UL CSA IECEx ATEX GOST INMETRO

What is ATEX?
ATEX stands for “Atmosphères Explosibles”. It is a European 2003 and products sold within the European Union designed

Gases are divided into four groups in the NEC (National Electrical

the same hierachy of classification of gases and vapor.

classified areas. The Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) uses
zone and group classified areas where division and group
classified products are allowed. There is no direct comparison
between the two styles of protection schemes. This means that
it is imperative that the two protection schemes are not inter-
changed within an area.

GOST (Russia)
GOST follows similar rules to that of IECEx as far as the
breakdown of the zones and other criteria are concerned.
However, the requirements for this country mean that separate
GOST markings are required on the product.

GOST is divided into GOST (R) which is the standard for

Russian Federation and GOST (K) that cover Kazakhstan.

Class & Division Vs Zones
There are differences across the certifications when classifying hazardous locations. Below are two tables that compare the
class / Division system with the zone system. In addition to the tables in the pages that follow are illustrations that may help you
understand the Zone system in more detail. It is also important to note that recently there has been some harmonization of the
Zone system into the Class and division system.

Cable and Conduit in Hazardous Locations

Hazardous Location Guide | KOPEX-EX™ and STAR TECK® 19

Thomas & Betts has a Termination for Any Application
Thomas & Betts offers both conduit and cable system termination fittings as well as a diverse range of conduit for cable
protection. Here we discuss the two systems and how they suit applications in hazardous environments.

Cables vs. Conduit

• Cable and conduit should be considered complementary.

• Cable is an ideal solution for routing over long distances

Conduit is ideal for routing many cables/wires over a short distance generally 10' or less to the same two points.

Cable
If cable is appropriate, there is a selection of many different cables Exd
from which to choose. The choices can be complicated when
compliance with Exd is required since cables must also be:

• Substantially compact and circular cable

• Extruded beading.

• Fillers which are Non-Hygroscopic

(Hygroscopic is the ability of a substance to attract and
hold Water molecules from the surrounding environment)

Next, consider the amount of cable required and where they Exe
are terminating. For example, if they are terminating at the same
control box then this may impact the size of the enclosure.

Cable Types
Steel Wire Armored Cable

Steel wire armored cable or SWA Cable, is a durable mains electricity cable with class 2 stranded copper conductors,
XLPE (Cross-Linked Polyethylene) insulation, PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) bedding, aluminum or steel wire armor and
a black PVC sheath. SWA Cable is sometimes referred to as Booklet Armored Cable, Mains or Power Cable. The
voltage rating of an SWA Cable is 600/1000V. It can be found in underground systems, and other power networks.

Applications
Designed to deliver mains electricity, this cable is applicable to all industries and can be found in underground systems
and other power networks.

Steel Tape Armored

Similar to SWA cable, the armor is steel tape wound around the conductors instead of stranded metal.

Applications
Used for the transmission of low voltage electric power indoors and outdoors in industrial environments where there is
an increased risk of mechanical damage or rodent damage e.g. warehouses, manufacturing, and outdoor lighting.

Steel Wire Braid

Steel wire braid cables are the most flexible of the armored cables. Similar to SWA and STA, they are first insulated
with some form of non metallic shielding and then overlaid with the armor. SWB armor is made up of braided steel
fibers which are woven to allow for a greater degree of flexibility and strength than other armored cables which allows
for the cables to be used where there are high degrees of mechanical strain.

Applications
SWB cables are used to deliver power to tooling and machines in industrial and manufacturing environments, HVAC,
commercial construction and in data processing systems.

Cable Types Continued
Aluminum Wire Armor

Very similar to the SWA cable except the wire is aluminum instead of steel. Aluminum is not magnetic and so
it is used when the cable has only one core. Single core cable produces a magnetic field which would create
a current in the armor if the armor were steel.

Applications
Used for main fixed power and control in industrial environments where protection against mechanical
damage is required. Suitable for power networks, direct burial, outdoors, indoors and in cable ducts.

Teck Cable or JMC Cable

Jacketed, Metal Clad (MC), 600V, 5kV, 8kV and 15kV, 90°C, UL 1569. Types of armor include Aluminum
Interlocked Armor (AIA) and Continuously Welded Sheath (MC-HL). This is a general purpose cable.

Applications
Power, lighting and control circuits in: pulp and paper mills, steel mills, food processing plants, commercial
centers, mines, generating stations, refineries, industrial plants and chemical plants.

Metal Clad or MC Cable

Metal Clad cable is meant for lower current loads (circuits <600V) and usually has two or more conductors
inside but there is no limit on this number. Each conductor is insulated with polyethylene.

Applications
Services, feeders and branch circuits, power, lighting and signal circuits, in indoor/dry areas in cable tray,
raceways, embedded in plaster or against other masonry. MC Cable can be used in commercial construction,
multifamily homes, industrial plants, warehouses, hospitals, elevators and on cranes. Due to the possibility of
corrosion the uses are limited in industries where harsh chemicals and vapors are present.

Conduit
Conduit permits multiple cores to be run through the same Figure A
conduit thereby reducing the number of cable entries Exd
required. Shown opposite are two types of enclosure. Figure
A demonstrates a conduit termination in an explosion proof
enclosure – EXD type. Obviously, the fewer holes for cable
entry into this type of box the better as the components
within this box have the potential to produce a spark. This
box is typically made of heavy duty steel or cast and has to
be completely sealed. Figure B is that of an increased safety
enclosure or EXE type. The components that are housed
in such a box are non-arcing and will not produce a spark
outside their outer shell. These boxes are made out of lighter
duty metal or even plastic and can have many cable entry
points due to the safety of the components inside. The only
reason to seal around conduit or cable entering these boxes
Figure B
is to keep out dust, debris and prevent liquid ingress.
Exe

Advantages of Conduit Systems

• Easier termination of the cables

• Reduced installation time

• Greatly reduces the risk of compromise to the

integrity of the enclosure

• Additional cables can be added without the need for

drilling more entries (Exe only)

• Potential to reduce the enclosure size

• Minimize risk of damage through crushing

Did you know…
• Potential to run power and data through one conduit
system (data needs to be screened)
There is a difference between the way NPT and Metric
• EMC can be obtained through the conduit conduits are measured. NPT measurement is of the inner
• Use of SWA cable not required diameter and the Metric measures the outside diameter.
