What is an explosion?
• An explosion is a rapid increase in volume and release of energy in an extreme manner, usually
with the generation of high temperatures and the release of gases.
• The resultant sudden increase in pressure can result in physical damage to surrounding areas
and/or total destruction of an item/site.

What is ATEX?

classified areas. The Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) uses
zone and group classified areas where division and group
classified products are allowed. There is no direct comparison
between the two styles of protection schemes. This means that
it is imperative that the two protection schemes are not inter-
changed within an area.
GOST (Russia)
GOST follows similar rules to that of IECEx as far as the
breakdown of the zones and other criteria are concerned.
However, the requirements for this country mean that separate
GOST markings are required on the product.

NEMA Type Definition
General-purpose. Protects against dust, light, and indirect splashing but is not dust-tight; primarily prevents contact with
1
live parts; used indoors and under normal atmospheric conditions.
Drip-tight. Similar to Type 1 but with addition of drip shields; used where condensation may be severe (as in cooling and
2
laundry rooms).
Weather-resistant. Protects against weather hazards such as rain and sleet; used outdoors on ship docks, in
3, 3S, 3X
construction work, and in tunnels and subways. 3X includes corrosions.
Intended for outdoor use. Provides a degree of protection against falling rain and ice formation. Meets rod entry, rain,
3R
external icing, and rust-resistance design tests.
Watertight (weatherproof). Must exclude at least 65 GPM of water from 1-in. nozzle delivered from a distance not less
4 and 4X
than 10 ft for 5 min. Used outdoors on ship docks, in dairies, and in breweries. The 4X model has corrosion resistance.
5 Dust-tight. Provided with gaskets or equivalent to exclude dust; used in steel mills and cement plants.
Submersible. Design depends on specified conditions of pressure and time; submersible in water or oil; used in quarries,
6 and 6P
mines, and manholes.
7 Hazardous. For indoor use in Class I, Groups A, B, C, and D environments as defined in the NEC.
8 Hazardous. For indoor and outdoor use in locations classified as Class I, Groups A, B, C, and D as defined in the NEC.
9 Hazardous. For indoor and outdoor use in locations classified as Class II, Groups E, F, or G as defined in the NEC.
10 MSHA. Meets the requirements of the Mine Safety and Health Administration, 30 CFR Part 18 (1978).
11 General-purpose. Protects against the corrosive effects of liquids and gases. Meets drip and corrosion-resistance tests.
General-purpose. Intended for indoor use, provides some protection against dust, falling dirt, and dripping noncorrosive
12 and 12K
liquids. Meets drip, dust, and rust resistance tests.
General-purpose. Primarily used to provide protection against dust, spraying of water and noncorrosive coolants. Meets
13
oil exclusion and rust resistance design tests.
○ Solid Foreign Object e.g. An IP 67 rating is required the NEMA enclosure equivalent would be either a 6 or a 6P.

Conduit is ideal for routing many cables/wires over a short distance generally 10' or less to the same two points.
Cable
If cable is appropriate, there is a selection of many different cables Exd
from which to choose. The choices can be complicated when
compliance with Exd is required since cables must also be:
• Extruded beading.
Next, consider the amount of cable required and where they Exe
are terminating. For example, if they are terminating at the same
control box then this may impact the size of the enclosure.
Steel wire armored cable or SWA Cable, is a durable mains electricity cable with class 2 stranded copper conductors,
XLPE (Cross-Linked Polyethylene) insulation, PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) bedding, aluminum or steel wire armor and
a black PVC sheath. SWA Cable is sometimes referred to as Booklet Armored Cable, Mains or Power Cable. The
voltage rating of an SWA Cable is 600/1000V. It can be found in underground systems, and other power networks.
Applications
Designed to deliver mains electricity, this cable is applicable to all industries and can be found in underground systems
and other power networks.
Similar to SWA cable, the armor is steel tape wound around the conductors instead of stranded metal.
Applications
Used for the transmission of low voltage electric power indoors and outdoors in industrial environments where there is
an increased risk of mechanical damage or rodent damage e.g. warehouses, manufacturing, and outdoor lighting.
Steel wire braid cables are the most flexible of the armored cables. Similar to SWA and STA, they are first insulated
with some form of non metallic shielding and then overlaid with the armor. SWB armor is made up of braided steel
fibers which are woven to allow for a greater degree of flexibility and strength than other armored cables which allows
for the cables to be used where there are high degrees of mechanical strain.
Applications
SWB cables are used to deliver power to tooling and machines in industrial and manufacturing environments, HVAC,
commercial construction and in data processing systems.
Very similar to the SWA cable except the wire is aluminum instead of steel. Aluminum is not magnetic and so
it is used when the cable has only one core. Single core cable produces a magnetic field which would create
a current in the armor if the armor were steel.
Applications
Used for main fixed power and control in industrial environments where protection against mechanical
damage is required. Suitable for power networks, direct burial, outdoors, indoors and in cable ducts.
Jacketed, Metal Clad (MC), 600V, 5kV, 8kV and 15kV, 90°C, UL 1569. Types of armor include Aluminum
Interlocked Armor (AIA) and Continuously Welded Sheath (MC-HL). This is a general purpose cable.
Applications
Power, lighting and control circuits in: pulp and paper mills, steel mills, food processing plants, commercial
centers, mines, generating stations, refineries, industrial plants and chemical plants.
Metal Clad cable is meant for lower current loads (circuits <600V) and usually has two or more conductors
inside but there is no limit on this number. Each conductor is insulated with polyethylene.
Applications
Services, feeders and branch circuits, power, lighting and signal circuits, in indoor/dry areas in cable tray,
raceways, embedded in plaster or against other masonry. MC Cable can be used in commercial construction,
multifamily homes, industrial plants, warehouses, hospitals, elevators and on cranes. Due to the possibility of
corrosion the uses are limited in industries where harsh chemicals and vapors are present.
