AROHAN Round 1 : Situation

Olluna spent all her Sunday afternoons sitting by the Palladian windows of her home and
reading novels with hot coffee. However, today, she felt lost looking out of the window. She
was wondering what will she do at the office now, without her friends and how will she spend
time there without them. The sight of last night of her hugging Gloria goodbye was replaying
in her mind since then. She felt insecure and uneasy.
Olluna Brown was a 23-year-old young girl, who was just out of college and had started
working as an associate consultant with Abacus Solutions, an IT company. Olluna was in the
production team and had made friends with two girls – Jincy George and Gloria Hans, from
the sales team who had been working in the organization for the past one year. Jincy was a
research analyst and Gloria, a content writer. Both reported to the same manager, Clara, who
was AVP Sales of the company.
It all started two months back when Jincy had a tiff with her manager. Her manager was furious
and had warned her that she would have to pay for her conduct. The very next day, Jincy was
asked to resign by the HR because of her consistent poor performance. Everyone was shocked,
and no one could figure out what was wrong with Jincy’s performance when she had recently
been given an appraisal too. It seemed very apparent to Gloria and Olluna also that whatever
happened was a result of the tiff that Jincy had with her manager. Soon the regional HR of the
company visited the office and wished to talk to all the employees individually in private.
Gloria felt that this was a good chance to bring this matter to the management and shared the
incident with him. She was assured that her name would remain confidential. However, just
after two days, Clara again came to the office enraged and announced that she would find out
who brought up Jincy’s matter. Moreover, after a week, Gloria was asked to resign because of
performance issues.
Gloria had to serve a notice period of one week, and this incident had a very negative impact
on the work environment. People were feeling threatened and insecure. They doubted whether
the management was going to bring up some stringent policies or not. They were also worried
about who could be the next one who would be asked to resign due to “performance issues.”
However, one thing was for sure that there was too much negativity in the work environment,
and it was impacting the productivity of employees.
Gloria’s last working day was on Friday, and she was given a farewell on Saturday. Olluna was
close to tears when she bid her final goodbye. Since then, Olluna was lost in the same thoughts
of how both of her friends were asked to resign for no comprehensible reason. She felt lonely,
sad, and insecure. She just stared out of the window, thinking about what she could do now.
She thought if she could talk to her reporting manager about this but feared that Clara might
again get to know which might not be good for her. The other person with whom she could
speak was the CEO himself. She was not able to decide on what to do next.
Questions:
1. Which organizational problem(s) is/are do you think exist here? Provide your analysis
and possible solution.
2. What does this case tell about Clara’s character traits?
3. What would you do if you were in the shoes of Olluna?
