Tentamen: Inleiding Warmteleer GW

Datum: maandag 18 maart 2019
Tijd: 09:00 – 12:00 uur
Docent: Deodat Makhanlall, Ph.D

Studenten mogen een psychrometric chart meenemen naar het tentamen. Deze chart moet
ingeleverd worden samen met het werk van de student.

Problem 1 Debye’s law (5 points)

At very low temperatures, the molar specific heat of many substances varies with temperature
according to Debye’s law:

For rock salt, 281 and 1940 ⁄ ∙ .

Determine the heat needed to raise 2.75 mol of salt from 22.0 to 48.0

Problem 2 An ideal gas cycle (10 points)

A fluid at 0.7 occupying 0.09 is compressed reversibly to a pressure of 3.5
according to the law . The fluid is then heated reversibly at constant volume
until the pressure is 4 ; the specific volume is then 0.5 / . A reversible expansion
according to a law restores the fluid to its initial state. Assume that the fluid
can be treated as an ideal gas.

a) Calculate the mass of the fluid (2p)

b) What is the value of n in the first process? (2p)
c) Calculate the net work of the cycle (2p)
d) Explain how the internal energy of the fluid changes during each process, and discuss when
heat is being added and removed from the fluid. (4p)

Problem 3 Forced drying of lumber (7 points)

Moist air (50 and 32% relative humidity) is used to dry 6 of lumber. The drying rate of
the lumber is 4 / . The air is cooled to 18 during the drying process.

a) Determine the properties of the air as it leaves the dehumidification system, and compare
them to those at the initial condition. (3p)
b) Determine the kW of refrigeration required. (4p)
Problem 4 Heat conduction in bedding planes (8 points)
Consider a geological situation in which the subsurface is layered, with bedding planes making
an angle θ with the horizontal surface. Suppose that the thermal conductivity for heat
conduction parallel to BC is k and the conductivity for heat transport parallel to AB is 3k.
Though the bedding planes are inclined to the horizontal, isotherms are nevertheless horizontal.
Show that the upward surface heat flow is given by:
2 cos

Problem 5 Solar capsule (10 points)

A spherical capsule of radius 3 is fired from a space platform in earth orbit, such that it
travels toward the center of the sun at 16000 ⁄ . Assume that the capsule is a lumped
capacitance body with a density-specific heat product of 4 10 ⁄ .
a) Derive a differential equation for predicting the capsule temperature as a function of time.
[4p]
b) Given that the capsule is coated with a material of very low emissivity, solve the equation
derived in a) to obtain the temperature as a function of time in terms of capsule parameters
and its initial temperature . [4p]
c) If the capsule begins its journey at 20 , find the position of the capsule relative to
the sun at which its destruction temperature, 150 , is reached. [2p]
