κυρίως στην κέρκυρα, όπου η μελέτη τους κατέληξε στην έκδοση του ογκώδους επιστημονικού
καταλόγου Εικόνες της Κερκύρας (αθήνα 1990). στο σημαντικό αυτό βιβλίο δημοσιεύονται 136
άγνωστα ή λίγο γνωστά έργα, ταξινομημένα χρονολογικά και με εισαγωγικά κεφάλαια, όπου
παρουσιάζονται συνοπτικά και κριτικά τα δεδομένα της έρευνας.
ο Βοκοτόπουλος συνδέθηκε ιδιαίτερα με τη φιλοσοφική σχολή του Πανεπιστημίου θεσ-
σαλονίκης, όπου το 1975 υποστήριξε τη διδακτορική του διατριβή. εξελέγη έκτακτος (1976)
και στη συνέχεια τακτικός καθηγητής Βυζαντινής αρχαιολογίας (1980) και εδίδαξε έως το
1987, όταν δέχθηκε τιμητική μετάκληση στην αντίστοιχη έδρα του Πανεπιστημίου αθηνών,
όπου δίδαξε έως την αποχώρησή του, λόγω συνταξιοδότησης, το 1997. στο διάστημα αυτό ση-
μαντική ήταν η συμβολή του, ως μέλος του Διοικητικού συμβουλίου, στο Ίδρυμα μελετών
Χερσονήσου του αίμου και στο κέντρο Διαφυλάξεως αγιορειτικής κληρονομίας, ενώ γενικό-
τερη αναγνώριση της συμβολής του έγινε με την αναγόρευσή του σε αντεπιστέλλοντα εταίρο
του κέντρου Βυζαντινών ερευνών του Πανεπιστημίου θεσσαλονίκης το 2009 (Βυζαντινά 30,
2010, σ. 501–514). Έχει επίσης εκλεγεί ξένος εταίρος της σερβικής ακαδημίας επιστημών
και τεχνών (2007) και αναγορευθεί επίτιμος διδάκτωρ του Δημοκριτείου Πανεπιστημίου θρά-
κης (2010). σημαντική ήταν η συμβολή του στο Πανεπιστήμιο αθηνών, όπου μαζί με τον νίκο
οικονομίδη ανέλαβε την πρωτοβουλία για την ίδρυση και τη λειτουργία του μεταπτυχιακού
Βυζαντινού σεμιναρίου όπου συμμετείχαν και οι καθηγητές αθανάσιος κομίνης και σπύρος
τρωιάνος. το έτος 2000 εξελέγη τακτικό μέλος της ακαδημίας αθηνών και από τότε διευθύνει
το κέντρο Έρευνας της Βυζαντινής και μεταβυζαντινής τέχνης, όπου συνεχίζει το έργο της
επεξεργασίας και δημοσίευσης του συντάγματος των Βυζαντινών τοιχογραφιών που είχε ξε-
κινήσει ο μανόλης Χατζηδάκης. Παράλληλα ως υπεύθυνος του γραφείου των δημοσιευμάτων,
προώθησε την έκδοση αξιόλογων μελετών.
τα δημοσιεύματα του Βοκοτόπουλου είναι πολυάριθμα όπως φαίνεται και στον κατάλογο
που ακολουθεί. η ακρίβεια των περιγραφών, οι εύστοχες παρατηρήσεις οι οποίες στηρίζονται
σε ευρύτατη γνώση των έργων και των πηγών, μαζί με την απέριττη διατύπωση και τη λιτότητα
του ύφους, αποτελούν καίριο γνώρισμα των εργασιών του. οι μελέτες του καλύπτουν πλήθος
τομέων της βυζαντινής και μεταβυζαντινής αρχαιολογίας και τέχνης ενώ επεκτείνονται έως
την ιστορία, την αγιολογία και την επιγραφική. εκτός από τη θεμελιώδη εργασία του για την
αρχιτεκτονική των ναών της Βορειoδυτικής ελλάδος, και πλήθος άλλων δημοσιευμάτων για
τη ναοδομία, μεγάλος αριθμός μελετών του αφορά στη βυζαντινή μνημειακή ζωγραφική, όπου
ξεχωρίζουν τα άρθρα του για αδημοσίευτες τοιχογραφίες του 11ου αιώνα σε ναούς της κέρ-
κυρας. με άλλες δημοσιεύσεις συνέβαλε στη μελέτη άγνωστων ή λίγο γνωστών στην έρευνα

βυζαντινών χειρογράφων, από τις οποίες ξεχωρίζει η ωραία έκδοση του καταλόγου των εικο-
νογραφημένων χειρογράφων της Πατριαρχικής Βιβλιοθήκης των ιεροσολύμων (2002).
Περισσότερες είναι οι μελέτες του για βυζαντινές και μεταβυζαντινές φορητές εικόνες στις
οποίες αφιέρωσε δύο βιβλία (Εικόνες της Κερκύρας, αθήνα 1990, και Βυζαντινές Εικόνες, εκδοτική
αθηνών, 1993), τα οποία έχουν γίνει απαραίτητο βοήθημα για κάθε ενδιαφερόμενο μελετητή.
σε πλήθος άρθρων του παρουσίασε εικόνες της κρητικής σχολής, όπου ξεχωρίζουν οι μελέτες
του για άγνωστα ή παραγνωρισμένα έργα μεγάλων ζωγράφων όπως του μιχαήλ Δαμασκηνού,
του γεωργίου κλόντζα, του μάρκου Βαθά, του ιερεμία Παλλαδά, του Βίκτωρος και του εμ-
μανουήλ τζάνε. μελέτησε επίσης εικόνες άλλων εργαστηρίων της Βορειοδυτικής ελλάδος και
των ιονίων νήσων, ενώ σημαντικές είναι και οι μελέτες του για ζητήματα εικονογραφίας. η
επιστημονική δραστηριότητά του επεκτάθηκε σε ολόκληρη την ηπειρωτική και νησιωτική ελ-
λάδα, καθώς και σε πολλά εκτός ελλάδος κέντρα όπου εντόπισε και στη συνέχεια δημοσίευσε
μεγάλο αριθμό βυζαντινών και μεταβυζαντινών έργων: άγνωστες βυζαντινές τοιχογραφίες και
κρητικές εικόνες στην κέρκυρα και στα ιόνια, βυζαντινές εικόνες στην κύπρο και στα πα-
τριαρχεία της αλεξάνδρειας και των ιεροσολύμων, κρητικές εικόνες στην ιταλία και στην αλ-
βανία, στην πρώην γιουγκοσλαβία, στη ρουμανία και στη ρωσία, αδημοσίευτα χειρόγραφα
στο σινά, στη μυτιλήνη, στη μονή της αγίας λαύρας των καλαβρύτων, στην οξφόρδη, και
στην Πατριαρχική Βιβλιοθήκη των ιεροσολύμων.
αφοσιωμένος ερευνητής ο Βοκοτόπουλος, αναζητώντας ακατάπαυστα βυζαντινά κατά-
λοιπα κάθε είδους και εποχής, ως ανθεκτικός πεζοπόρος, εκτίμησε ταυτόχρονα τις αξίες της
ελληνικής υπαίθρου. φωτογραφίζοντας ανελλιπώς μνημεία και τοπία, αποτύπωνε την εικόνα
μιας ελλάδας που εξαφανίζεται. Πολύτιμα τεκμήρια οι εκδόσεις του με τις φωτογραφίες του
αγίου Όρους (2008) και των απέραντων τοπίων της ορεινής ηπείρου (2011).
ο Παναγιώτης Βοκοτόπουλος κέρδισε από πολύ ενωρίς την εκτίμηση από συναδέλφους
και μαθητές του στην ελληνική και στη διεθνή επιστημονική κοινότητα, τόσο για το πολύ-
πλευρο έργο του, που προσφέρει σε όλους μας έγκυρη και αξιόπιστη γνώση, όσο και για την
ευθύτητα που χαρακτηρίζει την προσωπικότητά του. οξύνους, ολιγόλογος και αφοπλιστικά
ειλικρινής, ταύτισε τον σχεδόν ασκητικό προσωπικό του βίο με την επιστημονική του δράση,
ιδιαίτερα μετά την απώλεια της αλησμόνητης ιουλίας.
ας του ευχηθούμε να μακροημερεύει και να οδοιπορεί ακαταπόνητος συνεχίζοντας το
έργο του με την ίδια επιμονή και τον ίδιο ενθουσιασμό.
