ASSIGNMENT: DESIGN FACTORS AND SIGHT DISTANCE

CEN: 564 Geometric Design

All questions need to be replied. Total marks awarded are 20. Weightage will be assigned to arrive at
component weightage as defined in Lecture Plan. Write your replay in your own language. The replies will be
checked for similarity as per institute policy. Reply with similarity will be rejected without any further
consideration.

1. Enumerate the following:

(i) Self-Explaining Roads
(ii) Design Vehicle
(iii) Annual Average daily Traffic (AADT)
(iv) Intermediate Sight Distance (ISD)

2. Differentiate between:
(i) Inter-city road and intra-city road
(ii) Generated traffic and Attracted traffic
(iii) Mobility and Accessibility
(iv) Arterial road and National Highway

3. List the factors affecting:

(i) Sight distance at an intersection
(ii) Coefficient of longitudinal friction ‘f’
(iii) Access control to be imposed
(iv) Total Road Land Width

4. Traffic count is made on a uniform road section 1 km long with no access point in between.
Continuous count of 365 days was 467565 vehicles (both directions), out of which 257160 vehicles
travelled in one direction and rest in other. Hourly count made at that location revealed that 141
vehicles passed through the location during peak hour. What would be the value of Directional
Design Hourly Volume of traffic?

5. A 3 km stretch is being studied in an urban area. The width of the roadway is 5.5 m in first km
length and 9 m for rest of the section. The operating speed on wider road is expected to be 50
km/h. The width constraint causes reduction in the operating speed at a rate of 10% per meter
reduction in the width. A minor road crosses this road at chainage 1.5 km. The traffic is moving in
both the directions. No median is provided in the first 2 km. Calculate, for varying conditions of the
road:
(i) Safe Stopping Sight Distance (SSD), with or without 2% longitudinal gradient
(ii) Overtaking Sight Distance (OSD), with or without 2% longitudinal gradient
(iii) Traffic on minor road moves at a speed of 25 km/h. Create a minimum sight triangle for this
priority intersection.
(iv) The set-back distance if the length and radius of horizontal curve in last km is 150 m.

Marking Key: 1×4 + 1×4 + 1×4 + 2 + (2×2 + 1×2) = 20 (weightage to be implemented)
