Body:
Causes of Obesity
Physical inactivity: Sedentary people burn fewer calories than people who are
active. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES)
showed a strong correlations between physical inactivity and weight gain in
both sexes
Overeating: Overeating leads to weight gain, especially if the diet is high in fat.
Foods high in fat or sugar (for example, fast food, fried food, and sweets) have
high energy density
Genetics: A person is more likely to develop obesity if one or both parents are
obese. Genetics also affect hormones involved in fat regulation
A diet high in simple carbohydrates: The role of carbohydrates in weight gain
is not clear. Carbohydrates increase blood glucose levels, which in turn
stimulate insulin release by the pancreas, and insulin promotes the growth of fat
tissue and can cause weight gain
Psychological factors: For some people, emotions influence eating habits.
Many people eat excessively in response to emotions such as boredom,
sadness, stress, or anger.
Diseases such as hypothyroidism, insulin resistance, polycystic ovary
syndrome, and Cushing's syndrome are also contributors to obesity.
Social issues: There is a link between social issues and obesity. Lack of money
to purchase healthy foods or lack of safe places to walk or exercise can increase
the risk of obesity.
Insulin: Insulin is a very important hormone that regulates energy storage,
among other things. One of its functions is to tell fat cells to store fat and to
hold on to the fat they already carry.
Leptin Resistance: Leptin is another hormone that plays an important role in
obesity. It is produced by fat cells and its blood levels increase with higher fat
mass. For this reason, leptin levels are especially high in people with obesity
Sugar: Added sugar may be the single worst aspect of the modern diet. That’s
because sugar changes the hormones and biochemistry of your body when
consumed in excess. This, in turn, contributes to weight gain.
Medical conditions: there are certain medical conditions that results in obesity
which are:
 Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): a condition that causes an
imbalance of female reproductive hormones
 Prader-Willi syndrome: a rare condition that an individual is born with
which causes excessive hunger
 Cushing syndrome: a condition caused by having an excessive amount
of the hormone cortisol in your system
 Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid): a condition in which the
thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough of certain important hormone
