Women Empowerment in Myanmar

Women in different parts of the world have still been challenged by gender discrimination,
sexual harassment, inequality in education, work and employment, as well as minimum
participation in politics at decision making level among others. Similarly, in Myanmar, the
experts have also issued that women empowerment is still far to go even though women have
a critical role to lead true transformation.
Many people in Myanmar are still convinced that men are more admirable than women and are
given preference in job opportunity, politics, education and inheritance. In rural areas, it is
obvious that various discriminating practices are supported or at least silently acknowledged.
This includes male decision-making in the households, mobility restrictions for women and so
often domestic violence.
The younger and more progressive, as well as those working in newly established networks
and community-based organisations have slowly contributed to raising a voice for systemic
change since traditional gender roles are repressive and have biased towards women.
While the present circumstance may remain far from the ideal, the government is trying to
share to help improve the lot of Myanmar People. The representatives and participation of
women in politics and governance have also increased.
Different civil society organisations to empower women’s rights and gender equality are
growing gradually from small local groups of ordinary people to greater networks which have
started combining a variety of national and international non-profit organisations.
These days, most companies and workplaces in Myanmar are trying to commit to driving
positive change for women in the global workplace. They integrate and support empowerment,
equality, and opportunity by creating an environment where all employees can reach their
goals.
Nevertheless, it is true that Myanmar has made greater strides in gender equality than
neighbouring countries, although it is still a long way to advance gender equality and empower
women.
