He makes a good point that we need to start with the calculations before we move past the
battery in our design. Thankfully though there is plenty of precedent of other electric bike brands
who have already done the calculations. Our plan is to build a lighter weight bike but heavier
options won’t hurt us as cities don’t have much elevation. Limiting factors in our choice of weight
include portability, speed, and range. The more unnecessary features or additions we have the
more we limit these factors. This may end with us choosing the more simple of the options and
focusing our efforts on cost effectiveness. Design sacrifices are typically the hardest part of
producing anything original in a crowded market.

Another thing our group had not considered yet was will the bike charge with a solar panel while
you ride it or while it’s stationary? Thankfully Mr. Colenbrander’s feedback helped us decide on
a choice, being stationary. He explained through energy calculations that it is more energy
efficient and practical to use stored power for the bike rather than having it gain energy from the
sun while riding.

Mr. Colenbrander also mentioned that solid state batteries are extremely limited in size as of
right now so we probably won't be using that concept. He instead suggested that we focus on
lithium ion batteries because of their density, which is what we will most likely be doing.
