1 Introduction
This document intends to demonstrate the WiMAX radio-planning capabilities of ICS telecom nG, using High
Resolution cartography. The term WiMAX includes various profiles :
• Fixed-Wireless type of WiMAX, where the Receivers are placed above the rooftops
• Nomadic type of WiMAX, where the receivers can be anywhere on the area of interest, including inside
the buildings
• Mobile-type of WiMAX that is still being developed by the equipment manufacturers right now, based
upon the IEEE 802.16e standard (ratified late 2005).

In order to follow this tutorial, the demo version of ICS telecom needs to be installed on the computer. Unzip
the file ICS telecom – a WiMAX tutorial in the root directory of your C drive. All logical links specified in the
next pages will be based upon this unzipped location.
Several milestones are available in this tutorial in order to avoid the user to start it from the beginning. Each

milestone is highlighted with the sign. The different milestones are located in :
C:\ICS telecom - a WiMAX tutorial\Project\Milestones.

2 The cartographic dataset

2.1 The project Manager

ICS telecom is basing its calculation on a cartographic dataset. A first step consists in specifying the tool the
locations of the cartographic data.
Step 1 : Launch ICS telecom
In the starting menu of Windows, go to Programs \ ATDI software \ ICS telecom Demo.

Once launched, the introduction image of the software will be displayed.

Step 2 : Configuring the project manager

ICS telecom will automatically display the project manager :

In case you click on Cancel, you can re-display this window by going to Files \ Project Manager :

The project manager is displayed, click on the Open Explorer button n, that will launch the Windows©
Explorer. In the Windows© Explorer, go to : C:\ICS telecom - a WiMAX tutorial\Cartography\High resolution
including buildings, select all the files included in the directory, drag-and-drop o them into the Project
Manager of ICS telecom. Once done, click on save project p in order to save the files locations as a .PRO file
into the following folder : C:\ICS telecom - a WiMAX tutorial\. We will name the file WiMAX tutorial.PRO. Once
back in the project manger window, click on Load q.

The cartographic dataset will be loaded into ICS telecom :

If the user wants to load the cartographic project directly by double-clicking on

the project file : Milestone1- loading the cartographic project.PRO file located in
the folder:
C:\ICS telecom - a WiMAX tutorial\Project\Milestones. This will load ICS
telecom directly, and the cartographic project as well.

2.2 The cartographic layers

2.2.1 Manipulating the cartography
2.2.1.1 Switching between the layers

Switching between the different loaded cartographic layers can be done by

left clicking on the Layer button on left hand side of the screen.

2.2.1.1.1 The image files

The first screen that will be displayed in ICS telecom will be the image. The tool manages several image types
such as georeferenced topographical maps, ortho-images…
If wanted, the user can switch between the map and an ortho-photo by left-clicking anywhere on the map,
and by selecting the Change Map option.

Then select the img and pal files located in the C:\ICS telecom - a WiMAX tutorial\Cartography\High resolution
including buildings\Ortho-image folder.

2.2.1.1.2 The Digital Terrain Model

The digital terrain model gives for each pixel of the map the altitude of the terrain above sea level.

This file is the calculation basis used by the propagation model in order to calculate the coverage plots.

2.2.1.1.3 The Clutter file

The clutter file is used by the propagation model (penetration loss for instance).

2.2.1.1.4 The building file

For each building location, the building file (extension .blg) describes its height above ground level. This file
can be used by ICS telecom for :
• Taking into account the shadowing effect of each building
• Generating a urban canyon effect in the streets
• Calculating the ray tracing reflections on the building sides for OFDM-enabled receivers
• Calculating the power received by CPEs located above the rooftops for fixed wireless-type of WiMAX
• Calculating the penetration and diffusion losses for indoor CPEs.

2.2.2 Zoom-In/Zoom-out
The user can zoom-in/zoom-out by clicking on the
magnifier icon located on the left hand side of the
main screen.
The mouse wheel can also be used to zoom in/out.

2.2.3 Distance and profile calculation

ICS telecom can easily generate a path profile from any point to any point on the map.

Step 1 : Go to Direct\Path calculation.

Step 2 : Make a left click on the map where you want

the profile to be drawn from.

Step 3 : Specify the basic technical parameters of the

transmitter and of the receiver :
• Frequency used in MHz;
• Radiated power in W;
• Height of the transmitting antennas (BS)
above rooftop level (ICS telecom can also be
configured to place the antennas according to
the ground and sea level);
• Height of the receiving antennas (CPE) above
rooftop level (ICS telecom can also be
configured to place the antennas according to
the ground and sea level).

Step 4 : Make a left click on the map where you want

the profile to be drawn to. Validate the height of the
receiver.

Step 5 : Analyze the path profile, where the terrain,

the foliage and the building heights are taken into
account.

Step 6 : In order to go back to the main screen, click

on close.

2.2.4 3D display
The cartography (and the results as well) can be displayed in 3D using ICS telecom. In order to do so, go to
Map \ 3D display \ real time 3D (powerful computers) or DEM/image layer (slow computers).
