What is a Case Study?

A case study analysis requires the students to investigate a business problem, examine the
alternative solutions, and propose the most effective solution using supportive evidence.

A case study should include background information on the specific topic, an analysis of
the case under student showing problems or effective strategies, as well as recommendations.

A case study can focus on a business or entire industry, a specific project or program, or a
person.

Steps in Case Analysis

I. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY


The overall summary of the case

II. TIME CONTEXT


Period when the problem existed

III. VIEWPOINT
Person or group of person responsible in finding solution to the problem

IV. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM


Within the case, you will find several problems – choose one and focus on it.
Make sure you state the problem in just one declarative statement, NOT a paragraph and
NOT in question form.

V. OBJECTIVES
 MUST – urgent! Adopt the SMART policy that could solve the problem immediately.
(Specific, Measurable, Achievable/Attainable, Result focus, Time bound)
 WANT – long run objectives or would want to maintain.

(Both MUST and WANT objective should start with “To be able …”
VI. AREAS OF CONSIDERATION
Factors that contributed to the central problem; these are the causes of the
problem. Apply the SWOT analysis.
Strength – internal positive aspects a company has over other or its competitors.
Weaknesses- internal negative aspects the company cannot overcome.
Opportunities – external factors awaiting which may put the company on top and
maintain its status as a leader.
Threats- external factors considered as challenges that must be overcome otherwise
these may affect the company’s status as a leader.

VII. ALTERNATIVE COURSE OF ACTION (ACAs)


Come up with at least three (3) ACAs and provide explanation.
Evaluate the proposed alternatives by providing the corresponding advantages and
disadvantages of each ACA.

VIII. RECOMMENDATION
Propose the best ACA and give your rational why choosing such ACA

IX. PLAN OF ACTION


Matrix of steps or things to be done or considered in implementing the ACA as
solution to the problem.
