ME 16R-AIR CONDITIONING AND VENTILATION SYSTEMS

I. PROBLEM SOLVING:

1. What is the specific volume of air-vapor mixture at 25oC and a relative humidity of 50 per cent at 101.3 kPa
barometric pressure?

2. What is the enthalpy of the air-vapor mixture at 65% relative humidity and 35oC when the barometric pressure
is 101.3 kPa?

3. What is the specific volume of air-vapor mixture at 30oC temperature and 0.015 kg vapor/kg dry air specific
humidity or humidity ratio and 90 kPa total mixture pressure?

4. What is the humidity ratio of air at 62 percent relative humidity and 35oC temperature when the barometric
pressure is 101.3 kPa?

5. A 5m x 5m x 3m room contains air at 25oC and 100 kPa at a relative humidity of 75 per cent. Determine: a. the
partial pressure of dry air, b. the specific humidity, c. the enthalpy per kg of dry air, and d. the masses of dry air
and water vapor in the room.

6. In cold weather, condensation frequently occurs on the inner surfaces of the windows due to the lower air
temperature near the window surface. Consider a house that contains air at 20oC and 75 percent relative
humidity. At what window temperature will the moisture in the air start condensing on the inner surface of the
window?

7. The dry- and wet-bulb temperatures of atmospheric air at 1 atmosphere (101.325 kPa) pressure are measured
with a sling psychrometer to be 25 and 15oC, respectively. Determine: a. the specific humidity, b. the relative
humidity, and c. the enthalpy of the air.

8. Consider a room that contains air at 1 atmosphere, 35oC and 40 percent relative humidity. Using the
Psychrometric Chart, determine: a. the specific humidity, b. the enthalpy, c. the wet-bulb temperature, d. the dew-
point temperature, and e. the specific volume of the air.

9. The air in a room has a dry-bulb temperature of 22oC and a wet-bulb temperature of 16oC. Assuming a
pressure 100 kPa, determine: a. the specific humidity, b. the relative humidity, and c. the dew-point temperature.

10. Determine the masses of dry aiy and the water vapor contained in a 240-m3 room at 98 kPa, 23oC and 50
percent relative humidity.

II. QUESTIONS TO ANSWER BRIEFLY:

1. What is the difference between dry air and atmospheric air?

2. What is vapor pressure?

3. What is the difference between the specific humidity and the relative humidity?

4. Is the relative humidity of saturated air necessarily 100 percent?, Explain.

5. Can the water vapor in air be treated as an ideal gas? Explain.
