THE PROPERTIES OF MATTER

Everything around us is matter.
Matter is anything that has weight and takes up space.
Everything you can see and touch is made up of matter.
Matter comes in three forms:
solid, liquid and gas.
Solid, liquid and gas will fill up space in different ways

for MMSU 1. Mass

is the amount of matter in a given object. The mass of an object does not
change wherever the object is located.
2. Weight
is the pull of gravity on matter. Weight changes depending the pull of
gravity.
3. Volume
is the amount of space occupied by matter.

Characteristics of Solids

All solids have definite shape and size. Solids are

rigid. Their shapes do not change when they are held.

The particles of a solid are closely packed. The

forces between the particles are strong

Characteristics of Liquids
Liquids have their own properties. Liquids
occupy space.

They have definite volume, but no definite shape.

They take the shape of their container.

Characteristics of Gases
Air is around us. Air is an example of gas.

for MMSU We cannot see the air (gas) but we can feel and
see it through the kite.

Gas has no definite size and shape but it takes the

shape of the container. Air fills and moves freely in the
container.
