Introduction
In accordance with IMO Res. MEPC.107(49), the bilge alarm shall keep the operation record
(including bilge separator status) for 18 months or over.
The bilge alarm starts monitoring the oil content from the outlet water of the bilge separator when the
signal that bilge separator is started is sent to the bilge alarm. The pressure switch is provided to
detect the pressure of sample water flow (Bilge separaotr status) in order to start monitoring by bilge
alarm (BilgMon488).
The pressure switch has a differencial pressure 0.006 MPa, so the point at switched ON and OFF is
not same pressure. OFF-pressure is lower than ON-pressure (- 0.006MPa).
Ex) If “ON-pressrue” is set to 0.01MPa, OFF-pressure is 0.004MPa.

2. Outline of the system

Bilge water is sent to the bilge separator for separation, and then the bilge separator carries out the
separation so that oil content is to be less than 15ppm. During operation of bilge separator, the
pressure of outlet increases to the operating-pressure. The pressure is detected by the pressure
switch and its pressure makes the bilge alarm the monitoring condition. The bilge alarm controls if the
outlet water from the bilge separator can be discharged or not. When the oil content is 15ppm or less,
the 3-way valve is changed to the direction of overboard discharge. When the oil content exceeds
15ppm, the 3-way valve is changed to the direction of the bilge tank (re-circulation line).
Since the pressure switch is not immediately changed to OFF by means that pressure of outlet of bilge
separator does not decrease, the 3-way valve is not changed to re-circulation line soon after stopping
the bilge pump. When the pressure of outlet decreases to the OFF-pressure (setting pressure –
0.006MPa), the 3-way valve is automatically changed to the re-circulation line.

3. Confirmation before operation
Confirm that the pressure switch is fitted on the sample line located between the outlet of bilge
separator and the bilge alarm, and wiring connection is carried out.
Confirm that the outlet pipe from the bilge separator and the bilge alarm are installed as shown below
drawing.
(Since the drawing is for reference, the valves or some equipment may be added.)

4. Setting
Read the bilge separator manual prior to operation. Unless the manual reads, it may cause the trouble
such as clogging the coalescer etc.
1) Fully open the valve which is located on the vent pipe (anti- Siphon pipe). The valve is provided to
prevent siphone phenomina so that the fluid level does not become low.
Note: If the fluid level becomes low, the separated oil contaminates the inside wall of separator.
2) Open the inlet valve and outlet valve of the system for operation.
3) Open the valve on the sample line.
4) Remove the cap on the pressure switch.

5) Open the cover of pressure switch.

3
6) Run the bilge pump. Confirm the pressure of 4th stage increases and check the water flow visually
on the hopper (or sight glass) located between the 3-way valve and the manual overboard valve.
7) By a plus screw driver, adjust the set pressure so that the set pressure is higher than the indicated
pressure value of the 4th stage pressure gauge. Then, adjust the set pressure to a bit lower than
the indicated pressure value of the 4th stage pressure gauge in order that the pressure switch will
change to OFF soon after stopping the bilge pump.
Bilge Alarm Power LED: Light ON (Stand-by) = Pressure switch is OFF
Bilge Alarm Power LED: Light ON and Flickering (Active) = Pressure switch is ON
After the above setting, rotate the adjustment screw one-half turn (right direction) for making sure
to be ON at the running of bilge pump.

Stand-by condition Active condition

5. Maintenace
Although the bilge separator is operated by usual way, the 3-way valve may not be changed to
overboard direction. This is caused by low pressure of 4the stage because of differential pressure
between 3rd stage and 4th stage due to clogging of coalescer gradually. In this condition,
re-adjustment of pressure switch would be carried out. When 4th stage coalescer is replaced with new
one, re-adjustment would be carried out.
