Comparing and Absolute Value
Use the rational numbers ½, -½, -2, and 1.

A) Use the <, >, and = to compare your negative numbers.

• -2 > - ½
B) Find the absolute value of each of the numbers.
• ½, ½, 2, 1
C) Graph all four numbers on a number line.
Number problems
• Create two addition problems; one using numbers with like signs and the
other using numbers with different signs. Be sure to solve each problem!

-2 + -2 = -4

-8 + 2 = -6
Number problems
• Create two subtraction problems; one using numbers with like signs and the
other using numbers with different signs. Be sure to solve each problem.

-4 - (-6) = 2

-5 – 4 = -9
Number problems
• Create two multiplication problems; one using numbers with like signs and
the other using numbers with different signs. Be sure to solve each problem!

4×6=2

-8 × 2 = -16
Number problems
• Create two division problems; one using numbers with like signs and the
other using numbers with different signs. Be sure to solve each problem!

8÷4=2

-9 ÷ 3 = -3
Real-Life Problems
• Write two real-life problems involving integers and solve to show their solutions.
One problem should be addition and one problem should be subtraction.
• Example of addition: Matt Ryan loses 24 yards in one play. On the next play he
gains 12 yard. How many yards did Matt Ryan gain from both plays?
• -24 + 12 = -12 yards, he ended up losing 12 yards
• Example of subtraction: A dolphin jumps 6 feet above the water to do a trick. The
dolphin then dives 20 feet under water. How many feet did the dolphin fall from the
top of its jump?
• 6 - (-20) = 26 feet
Real-Life Problem with Addition
• Sally went to the gym and burned 300 calories. After the gym Sally decided
to have pizza for dinner where she gained 400 calories. What is Sally’s net
calorie count?
-300 + 400 = 100
Sally’s net calorie count is positive 100 calories.
Real-Life Problem with Subtraction
• The record high temperature for Massachusetts is 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
The record low is -18 degrees Fahrenheit. What is the difference between
high and low?
104 - (-18) = 122
The difference between the high and low temprature is 122 degrees.
