Recommendations
These will give you a good starting point for a variety of photographic situations. Your settings will vary according the light,
lenses, and other equipment you are working with. You’ll likely find many settings that you want to adjust differently as you
develop your own style.
Super Simple
Everything on auto, then use “Flexible Program” to adjust the shutter
speed and aperture combinations. The camera will use all focus points to
achieve focus. Be careful of the camera focusing on subjects in the
foreground.
Portrait
While in Manual exposure (M) choose a shallow depth of field to separate your
subject from the background. Keep the ISO as low as possible for best quality.
Set WB then possibly add a bit of fill flash (try a -1 Flash Exposure
Compensation) to fill in the shadows and give a little sparkle to the eyes.
Focus on the nearest eye, lock focus in, and recompose into a pleasing frame.
A second option would be to be in Aperture Priority (A) while setting a wide
aperture like f/1.4 - f/4.
Action
Manual exposure will give you the most consistent results unless you are shooting
in both direct sun and shade. Keep a shutter speed of 1/500 or faster to stop the
action. A fast lens (e.g. f/2.8) is a great benefit here. The ISO will most likely need
to be 400 or higher. Indoor sports will often require ISO 3200 or more. Focus
needs to be put into the AF-C mode. A larger focus area, “Dynamic-area AF 25”,
will make tracking moving subjects easier. Use the continuous shutter release
option and shoot in short bursts. Another option is to be in the Aperture Priority (A)
mode while setting a “fast” aperture (f/2.8 - f/4).
General Photography
The Aperture Priority (A) mode can be easily shifted to any available aperture/
shutter speed combination. Set an ISO as low as you can until you decide you
need a faster shutter speed. Use exposure compensation, as necessary, for
dark or bright subjects. Single point focus allows for precise control of focus
selection.
