This is to confirm that M/S SMEC has been employed by National Highway & Infrastructure Development
Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) for Providing Consulting Services for Preparation of Detailed Project Report
and Pre-construction activities:
(i) For Construction of Approach Roads with Avalanches Protection works to West and East Portal of the
Proposed Zozila Tunnel between (between Baltal and Minamarg from Km 82.00 to Km 95.00 on
Srinagar- Leh Road (NH-1) and;
(ii)For making the NH-1 from Z-Morh Tunnel to Proposed Zozila Tunnel (Approx. 20 km) all weather
road in the state of Jammu & Kashmir.
The main project features of the project are:

 Total Road Length- 18.474 Km, 2 Lane


 Region/Terrain: Hilly Region/Himalayan Terrain
 Elevation (m)- Above 2700m to 3315m mean sea level
 Tunnel Length – Finished dia 9.7m, Excavated dia 10.8m, Finished Cross Section Area 68.2m 2,
Excavated Cross Section area 86.7m2; Twin Tube with cross passages, Four Lane, 2.361 Km (433m
and 1.928km tunnel length)
 Tunnel MEP and Ventilation Design, Heat Release Rate: 200 MW
 No. of Bridges with lengths and span (in m): 5 Nos. Length- 975m (4x35m, 5x35m,14x35m,1x35m
and 1x 135m)
 No. of Snow Gallery and lengths (m)- 2 Nos. (450m)
 Cut & Cover Tunnels (No and length in m): 8 Nos. (2350m)
 Avalanche Protection Dams (No., Length and Height in m)- 18 Nos. (Length- 2630m) (Ht- 11m)
 Embankment Type and Height (in m): Reinforced Earth Embankment (6-25m)
 Total Project Cost- 2516.51 Cr
The Contract was awarded to M/s SMEC in March 2018. SMEC's role in the Consultancy services included
the provision of the following services:
 Site visits, reconnaissance survey, road and bridge inventory, Review of all available reports, maps
studies and other information for the study area; including acquiring relevant satellite imageries.
 Topographic Surveys by Carto-SAT Satellite imagery survey which is equivalent to LiDAR survey
and Total Station
 Axle load surveys, geotechnical Investigation, hydrology and hydraulic studies, and others as needed
in sufficient detail to allow the development of technical designs and costs estimates for all project
elements for cost comparisons and economic analyses.
 GPR along existing highway for a length of 5km
 Seismic Refraction Survey (Geophysical survey) for a length of 2000m
 Total Investigation on Road and Tunnel Part: Total drilling: 1663m, Completed till date: 1593m.
 Environmental Impact assessment (Field air and water data collection) and Social Impact Assessment
(Public hearings).
 Preliminary technical design and cost estimate.
 Design of Road Alignment, Snow/ Avalanche Gallery, Avalanche catch/deflection dams (Avalanche
Protection Structres), Cut & Cover tunnels, Tunnel Alignment and Tunnel Design, high reinforced
embankment design, viaduct design, pile design
 Risk Assessment.
M/S SMEC has successfully completed the Feasibility studies Report (FSR) and Final Detailed Project Report
which includes all the services as per SMEC’s role in the assignment as mentioned above. SMEC has provided
the above services in a satisfactory manner in accordance to the project requirement.
This is for tender bidding purpose only and shall not be used for any other purpose other than as mentioned.
