Detailed Solutions

1. log 10 (x 2 –6x + 45) = 2 ⇔ x 2 – 6x + 45 = 10 2 = 100

⇔ x 2 –6x + 55 = 0 ⇔ (x – 11) (x + 5) = 0 ⇔ x = 11 or x = –5. Ans.(4)
2. When there is no mistake in a and b, the sum of roots must be correct.
When there is no mistake in a and c, product of the roots must be correct.
∴ Sum of roots = (6 + 2) = 8 & Product of roots = –(–7)(–1) = 7.
So, the correct equation is : x 2 – 8x + 7 = 0 ⇔ (x – 7) (x –1) = 0 .
∴ The roots are 7, 1. Ans.(4)
3. For equal roots, D = 0. So, 36k 2 – 144 = 0 ⇔ k 2 = 4 ⇔ k = ± 2. Ans.(4)

1 10
4. Given Eqn. is : y + = , Where y = x + 4
y 3 x−4

1
∴ 3y 2 – 10y + 3 = 0 ⇔ (y – 3) (3y – 1) = 0 ⇔ y = 3 or .
3

x+4 x+4 1
Now, = 3 ⇔ x = 8. And, = ⇔ x = – 8. Ans.(3)
x−4 x−4 3
5. By hit and trial method, we find that the correct relationship is
y = 100 – 5x – 5x 2 . Ans.(2)
6. For no real root, we must have D < 0.

64 8 8 8 8
∴ 25p 2 – 64 < 0 ⇒ p 2 < ⇒ p < or p>– ⇒ – <p< . Ans.(3)
25 5 5 5 5
7. Required equation is : x2 – 6x + 6 = 0. Ans.(1)

10 FG 10 − 1 IJ = 3. Ans.(3)
8. Sum of roots =
3
. So, other root = H 3 3K
5 c
9. Sum of roots = and Product of roots = .
a a

5 c 1
∴ = 10 and = 10 i.e. a = and c = 5. Ans.(1)
a a 2

−2 3k
10. Sum of roots = and Product of roots = = 3.
k k

−2 −2
∴ = 3 or k = . Ans.(4)
