DIRECTIONS: For the following questions, four options are given. Choose the correct option.

1. If the mean of 4 observations is 20 and when a constant C is added to each observation, the mean
becomes 22, the value of C is
(1) – 2
(2) 2
(3) 4
(4) 6

2. The average weight of a group of 20 boys was calculated to be 89.4 kg and it was later discovered

(2) 89.25 kg
(3) 89.55 kg
(4) 89.85 kg

3. In a class of 100 students, the mean marks obtained in a subject is 30 and in another class of 50
students the mean marks obtained in the same subject is 60. The mean marks obtained by the
students of two classes taken together is
(1) 4 0
(2) 4 5
(3) 4 8
(4) 5 0

4. A class has 20 boys and 30 girls. The average age of boys is 11 years and that of girls is 12 years.
What is the average age of the whole class?
(1) 11.6 years
(2) 12 years
(3) 10 years
(4) 11.2 years

5. Average daily wages for 250 workers in a factory is Rs. 30 and that of 200 workers in another,
factory is Rs. 35. The average daily wages (in rupees) of the workers of the two factories combined
is
(1) Rs. 36.05
(2) Rs. 32.22
(3) Rs. 29.85
(4) Rs. 31.72

6. The average weight of A, B, C is 45 kg. If the average weight of A and B be 40 kg and that of B and
C be 43 kg, then the weight of B is
(1) 17 kg
(2) 20 kg
(3) 26 kg
(4) 31 kg
7. The average age of three boys is 16 years. If their ages are in the ratio 4 : 5 : 7, the age of the
youngest boy is
(1) 8 years
(2) 9 years
(3) 12 years
(4) 16 years

8. Average monthly income of a family of four earning members was Rs. 2940. One of the earning
members died and therefore the average income came down to Rs. 2600. The income of the person

(1) Rs. 3280
(2) Rs. 3960
(3) Rs. 2770
(4) Rs. 5540

9. The average weight of 19 students was 25 kg. By the admission of a new student the average
weight is reduced to 24.8 kg. The weight of the new student is
(1) 24.8 kg
(2) 20.8 kg
(3) 20.6 kg
(4) 21 kg

10. The average age of a committee of 8 members is 40 years. A member aged 55 years retired and his
place was taken by another member aged 39 years. The average age of the present committee is
(1) 35 years
(2) 36 years
(3) 38 years
(4) 39 years
Detailed Solutions

1. Total of 4 observations = (20 × 4) = 80

Total of 4 after adding C to each = (22 × 4) = 88.
∴ 80 + 4C = 88 ⇒ C = 2. Ans.(2)
2. Total actual weight = (89.4 × 20 – 78 + 87) kg = 1797 kg.

1797
∴ Correct average weight = = 89. 85 kg. Ans.(4)
20
3. Total marks obtained by 150 students = (100 × 30 + 50 × 60) = 6000.

6000
Mean Marks = = 40 . Ans.(1)
150
4. Total age of 50 students = (20 × 11 + 30 × 12) = 580.

580
∴ Average are = = 11. 6 years . Ans.(1)
50
5. Total daily wages of 450 workers = Rs. (250 × 30 + 200 × 35) = Rs. 14500.

∴ Required average = Rs.

FG 14500 IJ = Rs. 32.22 . Ans.(2)
H 450 K
6. A + B + C = (45 × 3) = 135, A + B = (40 × 2) = 80 and B + C = (43 × 2) = 86.
∴ B = (A + B) + (B + C) – (A + B + C) = (80 + 86 – 135) = 31 kg. Ans.(4)
7. Let their ages be 4x, 5x and 7x.
Their total age = (16 × 3) = 48.
∴ 4x + 5x + 7x = 48 or x = 3.
So, the age of youngest = 4x = 12 years. Ans.(3)
8 . Income of person who died = (4 × 2940 – 3 × 2600) = Rs. 3960. Ans.(2)
9 . Weight of new student = (20 × 24.8 – 19 × 25) kg = 21 kg. Ans.(4)
10. Total age of committee now = (8 × 40 – 55 + 39) = 304.

∴ Average present age =

FG 304 IJ
H8K years = 38 years. Ans.(3)
