Masters of Science (M.Sc.) Power Engineering

at Brandenburgische Technische Universität, Cottbus - Senftenberg
Winter Semester 2015/2016
Letter of Motivation
I spent my childhood which included my complete primary education and three years of secondary
school studies at a village named ‘Kalapania’ in an island ‘Sandwip’ in Bangladesh. As an island
‘Sandwip’ is detached from the mainland, so there is no electricity connection form the national
grid. I used to do my study at night in the light of kerosene lamp. When our family has shifted to
city from village, I was so amused seeing the electrical light and other electrical and electronic
equipments as well as the facilities run by electrical power. Since then my fascination about
electricity grew up and I got myself interested in electrical power.
My huge interest and fascination about electrical power always forced me to study well those
subjects in secondary and high school years of study, especially in Mathematics, Physics &
Chemistry by which I came to know the basics about electrical energy and ultimately led to attend
a Bachelor of Science degree in ‘Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE)’ at the renowned
‘International Islamic University Chittagong (IIUC)’, Bangladesh through an entrance exam and
by merit. I remained a merit position holder throughout the academic years of graduation and
ranked overall 5th in the batch.
At IIUC, I was introduced to the great sphere of electrical and electronic engineering. I was taught
several fundamental courses that gave me comprehensive knowledge in each of the fields. During
my sophomore and junior years, I found myself becoming more and more interested in electrical
circuits, electrical machines, power system, power plants, control system and renewable energy
system. Besides, the things that inspired me most were the projects and related researches
conducted by the seniors of our department. I saw them working for hours in the labs; they always
tried to come up with a solution and implemented their ideas into practice. I volunteered them
every now and then. Besides I was lucky to attend several seminars arranged by the department
where experts from different fields of electrical and electronic engineering, delivered lectures
about their researches and works. These things coupled together and inspired me to conduct some
researches in the field of my interest especially in renewable energy. My undergraduate thesis was
“An Assessment of Wind Energy Prospect in Bangladesh and a 2MW Wind Power Plant at
Parky Beach” where I and my partner assessed the feasibility of wind energy in Bangladesh as
the country are presently promoting the renewable energies and targeted to get 10% electricity
supply from renewable energy by 2020. We found in our research that, as a source of renewable
energy, wind energy is very much expectant in the country. We had to carry out extensive study
in the field of renewable energy especially wind energy system and power system. After
graduation, I attended a 4 weeks professional training on ‘Industrial Technology on Electrical
Engineering and Instrumentation’ in the country’s reputed training institute named ‘Training
Institute For Chemical Industries (TICI)’ at Polash, Narsingdi, where we I was introduced to many
latest electrical and mechanical technologies with their automation process in practical field. I also
attended 10 days professional industrial training on ‘Electrical Transformer’ at ‘General Electrical
Manufacturing Company Ltd.’,Chittagong, where I learned the details of Electrical Transformer
in pragmatic way.

I had a plan to pursue my higher studies in Germany since it has a long reputation for its
engineering and technological education system. In fact, Germany is a symbol of technical
excellence. As technical skills and excellence cannot be achieved without excellent education, it
is therefore a promising and popular destination for higher education. I am convinced that,
Germany is way ahead of any other nation in engineering technology.
Bangladesh is a developing country and considered one of the most promising economically
emerging countries in the world. Electricity is the major source of power for most of the country's
economic activities. But shortage of electricity supply and professional experts hinder its all kinds
of development.

A quality graduate education that would enable me to become an expert in Power Engineering
field and pursue advanced degree are what I have aspired for. I also believe that good graduate
program is an essential step for realizing my long-term goals. I hope to fulfill my ambition at
Brandenburgische Technische Universität (BTU), which I consider one of the best to pursue
graduate studies. I have gone through the brochure and website of your university very carefully
and concluded that with excellent academic system including modern syllabus and high
knowledgable faculty, which seems to me very much research and practical oriented,
Brandenburgische Technische Universität (BTU) will provide a perfect world class environment
for graduate study and research. Moreover, the courses offered in Power Engineering from three
different particular branches namely ‘Electrical Power Engineering’, ‘Power Plant Technology’,
‘Sustainable Energy Supply’ are absolutely matched with my interest. In short, I can say that, I
have strong inclination to Electrical Power Engineering which led me to apply for the course.

After M.Sc. I want to pursue a Ph.D in the same field. From my professional career perspective, I
want to pursue a research oriented career, either as a teaching faculty member, or in an R & D
department of the industry. It is also my firm belief that, my gathered knowledge at BTU would
enable me to contribute to the development of my home country whenever I reach a respective
position.

I therefore look forward to joining your esteemed university for pursuing higher studies leading to
a Master degree. I would like to end by saying that I fully understand the kind of dedication,
perseverance and resolve a graduate program calls for; I believe that I have the ability and
determination to tread on this exciting path and hence I appeal to consider me for the admission.

Sincerely
Md Akram Hossan
