GUIDELINES FOR LAW FIRMS OR GOVERNMENT OFFICES SUPERVISING

APPRENTICES FROM SILLIMAN UNIVERSITY – COLLEGE OF LAW

1. The Law Firm/ Government Office must be able to provide adequate exposure on the
requirements detailed in the checklist, Annex “A” hereof, to the apprentice/s assigned to
their offices.
2. The Law Firm/ Government Office must designate a supervising lawyer/s who will
ensure that the required learning experience has been undergone by the apprentice/s.
3. The Law Firm/ Government Office must monitor the hours logged by the apprentice and
ensure that he has done so faithfully and accurately.
4. The Law Firm/ Government Office must submit the requisite certifications and grade
evaluations to the College in a prompt and timely manner.
5. The Law Firm/ Government Office must be adequately staffed and equipped to
maximize the required learning experience of the apprentice/s.
6. The Law Firm/ Government Office must ensure that the apprentice/s are exposed to,
and taught within the apprenticeship atmosphere, practices in the legal profession which
are consistent with, and strictly adhere to, the canons and ethics of the profession which
binds all lawyers.

We have read the foregoing guidelines and undertake to faithfully abide and be bound by the
same, recognizing that our participation in this Apprenticeship Program is for the preparation
and training of future lawyers who will be competent and ethical and who will be important
contributions to the development of the legal profession and the effective delivery of justice for
all.

Accomplished Checklist for SU Law Apprentices in Law Firms or Government Offices

A. Written Submissions

1. Study of law/legal research which must include submission of a written report with at
least the following (NB: because of confidential and ethical constraints, the apprentice
cannot submit the same report which he made for the law office to the College;
therefore, he must prepare a second hypothetical legal issues and the related
research of law and jurisprudence):
a. Narration of relevant facts (citing direct sources, i.e, witness, official reports,
police blotter, print or broadcast media, etc.)
b. Statement of legal theory/alternatives for clients/s
c. Review of relevant statutes and jurisprudence
d. Discussion on the theory/alternatives with reference to the law and the cases
e. Recommendation to supervising lawyer/team leader
2. Personal interview of client/witness under the supervision of a lawyer. The
interview conducted by the apprentice must be certified in writing by the supervising
lawyer and submitted to the College.
3. Affidavit Complaint with accompanying complainant’s affidavit. The draft prepared
by the apprentice certified by the supervising lawyer must be submitted to the College.
4. Civil Complaint or Special Proceedings Petition with accompanying annexes. The
draft prepared by the apprentice certified by the supervising lawyer must be submitted to
the College.
5. Position Paper for Complainant or Respondent before the NLRC with
accompanying annexes. The draft prepared by the apprentice certified by the
supervising lawyer must be submitted to the College.
6. Motion for TRO/Injunction. The draft prepared by the apprentice certified by the
supervising lawyer must be submitted to the College.
7. Motion to Dismiss. The draft prepared by the apprentice certified by the supervising
lawyer must be submitted to the College.
8. Pre-Trial Brief. The draft prepared by the apprentice contributing to the Brief must be
certified by the supervising lawyer and submitted to the College.
9. Participation in preparation of Trial Memorandum. The draft paper prepared by the
apprentice contributing to the Brief must be certified by the supervising lawyer and
submitted to the College.
10. Participation in preparation of Appeal Brief. The draft paper prepared by the
apprentice contributing to the Brief must be certified by the supervising lawyer and
submitted to the College.
11. Conveyance or Assignment of Property. The draft prepared by the apprentice
certified by the supervising lawyer must be submitted to the College.
12. Mortgage, pledge or antichresis document. The draft prepared by the apprentice
certified by the supervising lawyer must be submitted to the College.
B. Activities

13. Assist supervising lawyer at the Prosecutor’s Office. This activity must be certified in
writing by the supervising lawyer and submitted to the College.
14. Assist supervising lawyer at the Trial Court. This activity must be certified in writing
by the supervising lawyer and submitted to the College.
15. Assist supervising lawyer at the NLRC. This activity must be certified in writing by the
supervising lawyer and submitted to the College.
16. Assist a client at the Small Claims Court. This activity must be certified in writing by
the supervising lawyer and submitted to the College.
17. Assist a client during Barangay Conciliation. This activity must be certified in writing
by the supervising lawyer and submitted to the College.
18. Assist supervising lawyer in a CBA negotiation or equivalent negotiation for settlement.
This activity must be certified in writing by the supervising lawyer and submitted to the
College.
19. Assist supervising lawyer in counselling client on a business transaction. This
activity must be certified in writing by the supervising lawyer and submitted to the
College.
20. Assist supervising lawyer in a business negotiation. This activity must be certified in
writing by the supervising lawyer and submitted to the College.
21. Assist supervising lawyer with Corporate Secretary functions for a Board or
Stockholder’s meeting.
22. Title or document check. The apprentice must have reviewed a document, i.e. a
torrens title, tax declaration, Articles of Incorporation, Articles of Partnership, etc., and
verified its existence and accuracy at the appropriate government office. (Register of
Deeds, Assessor’s Office, Securities and Exchange Commission, etc.). This activity
must be certified in writing by the supervising lawyer and submitted to the College.
23. Assist supervising lawyer in counselling client on visa or immigration matters.
This activity must be certified in writing by the supervising lawyer and submitted to the
College.
24. Assist client at the Bureau of Immigration, or Bureau of Internal Revenue, or LTO,
or LTFRB, or MARINA, etc. This activity must be certified in writing by the supervising
lawyer and submitted to the College.
