ENTRY TASK:

WHAT IS ENERGY?
INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK:
•Date =
•Title = Non-Renewable Energy
•Page # =
DEFINE VOCABULARY TERM:

•Energy?
ENERGY:
•The ability of a system to produce a
change in itself or in the world around
it.
•The ability to do work.
•Represented by the symbol E.
WHERE DO WE GET ENERGY?
ENERGY SOURCES:
•Nonrenewable Resources
•Renewable Resources
NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES:
• Any natural resource from the Earth that exists
in limited supply and cannot be replaced if it is
used up; also, any natural resource that cannot
be replenished by natural means at the same
rates that it is consumed.
NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY:
• What are the different types of non-
renewable energy?

• Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dn_pV9fbCE
• Identify as many renewable and non-renewable
energy sources as you can!
EXAMPLES OF NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES:

• Fossil Fuels
• Coal
• Oil

• Nuclear Energy
FOSSIL FUELS:
• Energy from fossilized organic materials.
• They are formed from the organic remains of
prehistoric plants and animals.
• Example of which are:
• COAL
• OIL
• NATURAL GAS
LEARNING TASKS:
COAL:
• Coal is crushed to a fine dust and burnt.
• Burning coal produces sulphur dioxide, an acidic gas
that contributes to the formation of acid rain.
CRUDE OIL (ALSO CALLED PETROLEUM)

• Crude oil (called "petroleum")

is easier to get out of the
ground than coal, as it can flow
along pipes. This also makes it
cheaper to transport.
WHERE IS OIL FOUND?
NATURAL GAS:
Natural gas provides around 20% of the
world's consumption of energy, and as
well as being burnt in power stations, is
used by many people to heat their
homes.

It is easy to transport along pipes, and

gas power stations produce
comparatively little pollution.
IN YOUR GROUP, DISCUSS
THE ADVANTAGES AND
DISADVANTAGES OF
NONRENEWABLE ENERGY
ADVANTAGES:
• Very large amounts of electricity can be
generated in one place using coal, fairly cheaply.

• Transporting oil and gas to the power stations is

easy.
DISADVANTAGES:
• Basically, the main drawback of fossil fuels is pollution.
Burning any fossil fuel produces carbon dioxide, which
contributes to the "greenhouse effect", warming the Earth.

• Burning coal produces more carbon dioxide than burning oil

or gas. It also produces sulphur dioxide, a gas that
contributes to acid rain.
