HMT101 : CALCULUS 1

MODULE OUTLINE

1. Number systems:
 Natural, integral, rational and irrational numbers.
 Properties of real numbers: order, algebraic and completeness property
 The real number system: decimal and geometrical representation
 Inequalities and their solution sets.
 The Principle of Mathematical Induction.

2. Functions:

 Definition of a function, properties of functions


 Exponential, logarithmic, circular and hyperbolic and their inverses
 Odd and even functions
 Composite functions Limits of functions.
 Definition of a limit of function
 Formal definition of a limit of a function and its application
 Properties of limits.
 Hospital’s rule, sandwich theorem
 .Continuity of a function.

3. Differentiation:

 Definition of the derivative and its application.


 Differentiability of a function

(a) Derivatives of functions of a single variable e.g. polynomials, exponential, logarithmic,


circular, hyperbolic etc.
(b) Implicit differentiation Application of differentiation.
(c) To find stationary points of functions
(d) Rolle’s Theorem and the Mean Value Theorem.
(e) Optimisation

4. Integration:

 The definite integral.


 The indefinite integral or antiderivative.
 Practical techniques of integration.
 Method of substitution.
 Integration by parts and reduction formulae.
 Fundamental theorem of calculus.
 Application of integration to population growth and decay.

5. Sequences: (If time allows)

 Definition of a sequence.
 Limits of sequences.
 Properties of limits of sequences.
 Convergence and divergence of a sequence:
 Use of Hospital’s rule, squeeze theorem to
 Convergence or divergence of a sequence.
MODULE ASSESSMENT MARK(MAM)= 25%(ASSIGNMENTS)+75%(TESTS)

FINAL MARK= 25%(MAM)+75%(EXAM)

EXAM DURATION= 3HOURS
