INVESTIGATION OF ELECTROCHEMISTRY

Apparatus and chemicals

Beaker glass 500 ml (1) CuSO4 0.5 mol/dm-3 solution
U tube (1) KI 0.25 mol/dm-3 solution
Test tube (2) Starch 1% solution
Dropping pipette (2) PP solution
Power supply
C electrode
Fe electrode

Method
a. Electrolysis of KI solution
1. Insert a 0.25 mol/dm-3 KI solution into the U tube (up to 2 cm from the mouth of the tube).
2. Install electrode C and connect to a 10V direct current source for ± 5 minutes. Note the
changes that occur in the cathode and anode chambers.
3. Carefully remove the electrodes.
4. Take 30 drops solution from the anode and put it into test tubes. Add a few drops of starch
and shake it. Record all results.
5. Take 30 drops solution from the cathode chamber into test tubes. Add a few drops of PP
Record all results.

b. Electrolysis of CuSO4 solution

1. Electrolysis of 0.5 mol/dm -3 CuSO4 solution with electrode C as in the electrolysis of KI
solution above. Note the changes that occur.
2. Repeat step 1 using an iron electrode.
