REPLACEMENT OF RADIOACTIVE SOURCES

1 PURPOSE:
 To achieve efficient and proper process manipulation, it is necessary to replace radioactive source
after passing its half life
 Co-60 radioactive sources of different strengths are used to measure level at different location of
plant and their half life is 5 years
2 SCOPE:
 Electrical & Instrument Department (YES)
 Process (YES)
 Safety ( YES)
3 PRE-REQUISITE
 Approved critical work permit
 Proper tools
 Long Rod having length equal to transporting shield
 Leather Gloves
 Process isolation before starting the job
 Barricade the work area
4 PROCEDURE:
 Generate a critical work permit for replacement the radioactive source
 The designated engineer staff must be present for handling and off site activities related to
radioactive material (according to SOP / E&I / 90, Radiation Emergency)
 Ensure that the empty transport shielding and new sources transport shielding with their lock keys
should be at site, as near as possible
 As quickly as possible, dismantle & install new sources & kept dismantle sources in transport
shielding with lock
 After installation new sources, dump old sources transport shield into yard area bunker & lock the
bunker opening
 Perform calibration of radioactive based level monitoring system due to change of new sources (if
needed)
 After completion, close your work permit from concerned authorized personnel
 The deputed safety man will also close the job work permit by signing on it & confirm that now the
area is clear & all safety hazards have been removed
 Clean the area & remove all the tools
 Make an entry of the said job in the technician log book
4.1 DISMANTLING OF OLD SOURCE
 Unlock the old transport shielding and unscrew the head cover using suitable allen key

 Open the locking cover

 Now open the shielding lock of radioactive source via moving it anti-clockwise
 When the cover fully open, the non-active part of radioactive source will be falling down, hold it via
two long nose plier and pull down the source, bend it twice and immediately insert it in the old
transport shield
 Close the cover temporary
4.2 INSTALLATION OF NEW SOURCE
 Now unlock the new transporting shield as described above & open it from both ends
 Insert the long rod from one end and push the source to the other end
 Pull the rod source slightly and note that the ring marking on source
 Source having single ring marked, will be top side
 Bottom has two , three or four rings marked depending on the source type
 Now quickly install the rod source in the reactor , ensuring that the single ring marked side at
upwards direction
 Close the shielding cover of rod source as quickly as possible
