Exercise 1: Write on your document 5 sentences in Direct speech and change
them into indirect speech. Circle the verbs in each column.

1) Direct: "Don't fight with your sister," my mother said. "Get on with your
school homework."
Indirect: My mother told me not to fight with my sister and to get on with my
school homework.
2) Direct: "Be quiet! I'm watching television."
Indirect: She told us to be quiet while she was watching television."
3) Direct: He said, “I am going to school”
Indirect: He said that he was going to school
4) Direct: He said, “I write a letter”
Indirect: He said that he wrote a letter
5) Direct: She said to me, “I like your book”
Indirect: She said to me that she liked my book

Exercise 2: Have Ss Make a chart using the way the indirect speech changes in
every tense.
