THE INSULAR REGION OF COLOMBIA

The insular region of Colombia is the set of islands,

keys and islets far from the continental coasts, such
as the Archipelago of San Andrés and Providencia
in the Caribbean Sea and the Malpelo and Gorgona
islands in the Pacific Ocean. It does not include
river or lake islands.
The Caribbean Sea includes the archipelago formed
by the islands of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa
Catalina; the Alicia, Quitasueño, Serrana and
Serranilla banks, and a series of keys among which
the so-called Roncador and Albuquerque stand out,
about 700 km from the north coast of the country. In
the Pacific Ocean are the islands of Gorgona,
Gorgonilla and Malpelo

Socioeconomy of the insular region

The main source of income for the Colombian
insular region is tourism. The island region has the
most beautiful beaches and one of the main hotel
complexes in the country, which is visited annually
by nationals and foreigners. The island region is
also famous for the movement of its trade. Gorgona
is an ideal natural park for biological research.
Large-scale ecotourism is practiced in the region.
The economy of the region is not very diversified,
currently it depends basically on these factors:

tourism
This region is very attractive, so its economic
activity revolves around tourism, both national and
foreign.
Its beaches are the main thing to exploit, but there is
a great variety of places and resources that have
given rise to ecological tourism.
On the Island of San Andrés there are hotel
complexes that are visited all year round by tourists
from all over the world. These are in search of
recreation, relaxation and fun.

Fishing
The fishing activity in the region is rich and very
varied. It does not generate enough income to base
the region's economy on fishing, but for the
subsistence of the inhabitants themselves.
Trade in goods
The commercialization of agricultural products,
fishing, and tourism, has generated a more than
interesting commercial situation in the area. and its
importance has been growing over time.

farming
Agriculture in the area is based on plantations of
coconut, banana, plantain, corn, melon, paprika,
tomato, eggplant and various tropical fruits. The
commercialization of agricultural products from the
area was the main source of income for this region
until economic policies focused more on tourism.

Cattle raising
Livestock in the region is limited to raising pigs or
pigs and goats, as well as raising poultry.
