1.0 INTRODUCTION
M/S. DARASHAW & CO. PVT LTD is planning to construct Cultural Centre at Rameswaram
in Ramanathapuram district. M/s. GS ASSOCIATES, Madurai, carried out this investigation
and completed field work on 2st February 2020 according to the instructions from Project
in-charge of the project. This report contains the geo technical investigation details of two
Bore Holes of Cultural Centre at Rameswaram in Ramanathapuram District.

1.1 THE SCOPE OF WORK INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING

 Making Two numbers of Standard Soil Investigation Rotary bore-holes
 Collecting disturbed soil samples at regular depth intervals wherever possible
 Conducting SPTs at every 1.50m depth intervals
 Conducting laboratory tests for determination of index and engineering properties of
disturbed soil samples
 Submitting report with laboratory test results and recommendations for foundations.

1.2 OBJECTIVE
The objective of soil investigation is to ascertain the nature and characteristics of sub-soil
below the ground level at the site and to establish relevant properties for determination of
safe bearing capacity of soil.

1.3 DESCRIPTION OF STRUCTURE

The proposed structure is Cultural Centre. The exact details of columns are not available at
the time of preparation of this report. Assuming an approximate column spacing of 5 to 6m
c/c considering this the central column load works about 150 tones Cultural Centre. These
loads are assumed for the purpose of foundation only and for the structural design, exact
loads are to be estimated based on a suitable structural analysis.

1.4 SOIL INVESTIGATION

The field investigation works were carried using Rotary mechanical drilling Rig. The
following activities, carried out in chronological sequence, comprised the field work for the
project
 Mobilization of rotary drill rig, water pump, testing tools and accessories.
 Collection of disturbed samples of every 1.5m interval.
 Sampling and logging of the boreholes. Packing, labelling and dispatching the samples to
laboratory.
 Field investigation, tests and laboratory tests conducted as per IS-1892 and IS-2720.

1.5 FIELD SAMPLING

Sub Soil Investigation Report

Two numbers of standard soil investigation boreholes of 150mm diameter was made at the
locations shown in the Key Plan. Investigations were conducted 10.00m depth from
existing ground level, where SPT is more than 50 blows. SPTs were conducted at every
1.5m depth intervals and samples were collected for identification and testing.

1.6 METHOD OF INVESTIGATION

1.6.1 Exploratory Bore Hole
Exploratory borehole was advanced using rotary washing method so that minimum
disturbance was attributed to the soil below the boring depth. Borehole was always kept
filled with drilling mud to prevent any negative hydrostatic pressure within the borehole.
Boring through the soil was performed using TC bit & diamond drill bit with side jets for

drilling mud. Standard penetration tests, disturbed sampling, field identification of soil &
rock samples, etc., was carried out in these bore holes.

1.6.2 Standard Penetration Test

Standard Penetration Test (SPT) was performed on the sub soil. In this test, a standard
split spoon of length about 460 mm and external/internal diameter of 51/35 mm initially
penetrates the soil for 15cm to bypass the expected accumulated sludge at the bottom of
the hole by means of a 63.5 kg (140 lb ) hammer falling freely along a guide from a height
of 760 mm. The total number of blows (N) required, to advance the spoon into the
bore, for another two successive 15cm (a total of 30 cm) is recorded as a measure of
the soil relative density or consistency as given in Table 1.1. SPT was conducted at a depth
interval of 1.5m below the ground level. The fieldwork was carried out under the close
supervision of our engineer in accordance with Indian Standard mentioned earlier.

1.6.3 Sampling in Bore Holes

Soil collected in the SPT sampler was preserved in polythene covers and transported to
laboratory. Additional polythene cover was provided to prevent the loss of moisture during
the transit period. Rock samples also collected using double tubes core Barrel preserved in
wooden core boxes and transported to laboratory to conduct various tests.

1.6.4 Field Boring and Sampling

150mm diameter borehole is made at locations identified by the Site Engineer. The
borehole is drilled to varying depth and the details such as location & depth of

1.10 DISCUSSION ON FOUNDATION

Based on field data and laboratory data indicates Fine Sand up to 6.00m followed by
Coarse Sand up to 10.00m below existing ground level. Hence Open foundation is
recommended for the Proposed Cultural Centre.

1.11 FOUNDATION SYSTEM

1.12 PROPOSED FOUNDATION SYSTEM
Considering the sub soil conditions encountered at the investigation locations, the
foundation system discussed below is technically viable solution and depending upon the
relative economics and construction feasibility the foundation system discussed below can
be adopted.

The top layer up to 6.00 m is Fine Sand followed by Coarse Sand up to 10.00m is
considered for Open foundation. The bearing capacity has been assessed as per the IS
6403: 1981. The allowable bearing pressure is calculated as per IS 8009(Part 1)-1976
(Reaffirmed 1998). A factor of safety of 2.5 has been adopted to arrive at the safe bearing
capacity.

Since the structural design was not done for the proposed Cultural Centre, the maximum
column load is not known. Therefore, the bearing capacity for different type of foundations
are recommended. After Structural Design, the depth of foundation will decided by the
structural engineer according to the load & SBC value.

Sub Soil Investigation Report

The calculated allowable bearing pressure for isolated footing is listed in the table for the
footing size of 1.00 m x 1.00m at the depth of 1.50m, 3.00m & 4.50m from the existing
ground level, Presented in the Table1.3

1.13 RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on SBC, the recommendation for foundation is submitted for Entrance Arch is
presented in the Table 1.4

2 3.00 21.59 21.42 21.00

3 4.50 36.33 35.89 35.00

The general recommendation is given below.

 Foundation concrete will be laid in dry conditions.
 In case of excavation in rock. The trenches around the footing shall be filled up with
concrete M15 grade up to top of the rock.
 The minimum embedment depth of rock is 0.60m.
 100mm thick PCC mat in M10 will be provided below the foundation concrete.
 All open foundations placed on rock strata will be anchored properly through Dowel
bars as per IS specification

Sub Soil Investigation Report

 As per the SBC calculation presented above, isolated foundation is recommended and
the depth of foundation will decided by the structural engineer according to the load &
SBC value.
 Due to low percentage of clay present in the soil between ground level to 10m, sliding
may occurs during execution. Hence proper Shoring may be provided
