THE BHOPAL TRADEGY

1. The leakage of gas at the Union Carbide Corporation at Bhopal in the state
of Madhya Pradesh, India cause the immediate death of more then 3,008
people. However, the government said that the Bhopal gas leak cause 5,
058,125 injuries that included approximately 3,900 severely and
permanently disabling injuries.

2. No, the facility continued to operate with safety equipment and procedures
far below the standards found in each sister plant in West Virginia. The
local government was aware of the safety problems but didn’t take actions
on it.

3. The UCIL also known as Union Carbide India Limited and owned by UCC
together with the Indian Government, the factory was being controlled by
the banks. With that the Indian public is holding an almost 49.1 percent
stake of it. In the year 1989, the UCC paid with the amount of $470 million
in order for them to settle the litigation stemming from the disaster. While
in the year of 1994, the UCC already sold its stake in UCIL to Eveready
Industries India Ltd (EIIL), which subsequently merged with McLeod Russel
(India) Ltd. Eveready ended clean-up on the site in the year 1998, it is being
terminated and it has a 99-year lease and turned over control of the site to
the state government of Madhya Pradesh. Dow Chemical
Company purchased UCC in 2001, seventeen years after the tragedy.

4. The role of DOW is to simply provide the needs of people of India especially
when it comes to their medical and to secure the safety of the local
communities of India. They should support the improvement in health of
the victims.

5. India needs right now are the growth of the middle class, their standard
when it comes in education and their skill development. Some
infrastructures improvements and of course their availability of
informations in each places. And most importantly their food security and
nutrition’s and health.
6. So obviously, the DOW should study first what is the possibly outcomes of
this project because we don’t know what danger it may give it to the
society. On how these chemicals could affect the surroundings. It will serve
as a lessons and as warning signs especially to those who want to build a
business, always put it mind the safety of your surroundings.
