Operator efficiency is a key performance metric in the apparel industry that measures productivity. It is calculated by dividing the total minutes an operator takes to produce garments by the total minutes they work, and multiplying by 100. Higher efficiency means an operator can produce more garments in the same time, lowering manufacturing costs. Factory capacity and line efficiency are also estimated based on operator efficiency levels. An alternative is to measure "on standard efficiency" which only considers minutes worked on standard tasks.

In Apparel Industry, Skill and Expertise of sewing operator is being
presented in terms of “Efficiency”. Higher Efficiency having Operator produces more garments than that of operator who having less efficiency in same time frame. When Operator works with Higher Efficiency, Manufacturing cost of garment factory goes down. [4]
Factory capacity is estimated according to Line Efficiency or
Operator Efficiency. So, Efficiency is most used performance measuring tool in Factory. To calculate Operator Efficiency we needed Standard Allowed Minute (SAM) of the garment and Operations your operator is making. [4]
Efficiency Calculation Formula:
Efficiency (%) = [Total minute produced by an operator / Total minute attended
by him × 100]
Where, Total minute produced = Total pieces made by an operator × SAM of
an operation (minutes) and
Total minute attended = Total hours worked on the machine × 60 (Minute) [4]
On Standard Operator Efficiency:
Instead of “Overall Efficiency”, Operator efficiency can be expressed as “On
Standard Efficiency”. If Operator is attending all hours in a shift but he has not given ‘on standard work’ to do in all hours so that he can’t do the work as per his/her capability and skill level i.e. Total minute produced by an Operator. Therefore use following formula to calculate Operator Efficiency. [4]
Operator On-Standard Efficiency (%) = Total minute produced / Total on
-standard minute attended × 100
Where,
Total minute produced = Total pieces made by an operator × SAM of an
operation (minutes)
Total on - standard minute attended = (Total Hours Worked – Loss time) × 60
