Factoring Sum and Difference of Two Cubes/ Grouping

Grade 8BCEF

Steps Factoring Sum and Differences of Two Cubes

1. The factors must be a binomial and a trinomial.

2. The binomial factor is the cube root of the two cubes. The factors are expressed as
addends/ difference.
3. The trinomial factor consists of the following:
a. The first terms is the square of the first term of the binomial factor.
b. The middle term is the product of the terms of the binomial factor with the
opposite sign of the product.
c. The last term is the square of the second term of the binomial factor.

Factor the following by grouping completely.

1. z2 + 2z + 4z + 8 -> z2 + 6z + 8 -> (z+4)(z+2)

2. a2 + 8a+ 5a+ 40 -> a2 + 13ª + 40 -> (a+5)(a+8)

3. u2 – u + 6u – 6 -> 5u-4

4. x2 – x + 4x – 4 -> x2 –3x – 4 -> (x+4)(x-1)

5. 2x2 – 14x – 5x +35 -> 2x2 – 19x +35 -> (2x-5)(x-7)
