REAL-WORLD CASE STUDIES
ICICI Bank – Videocon Saga: Fraud detection in Banking, Indian Institute of Management,
Lucknow

The second-largest bank of India, ICICI Bank, and its former CEO, Mrs Chanda Kochhar, had been
in the news after the loan issued to Videocon was declared as NPA. With allegations against Mrs
Chanda Kochhar of having a personal interest, the CBI registered a preliminary inquiry against
Deepak Kochhar (Chanda Kochhar's husband) and Venugopal Dhoot, Chairman of the Videocon
Group, to investigate the loan given to the company.

Zerodha – Sustaining a leadership position in India, Harvard Business School Publishing

In January 2019, the low-cost brokerage house Zerodha emerged as India's largest broker.
However, the company needed a strategy to maintain and defend its leadership position by
tapping India's retail broking segment for continued growth. And in a market swamped with
nearly identical products, Zerodha needed a strategy to avoid being confused with similar firms
and to consistently be consumers' first choice.

Risk Management at Wellfleet Bank, Harvard Business School Publishing

This case motivates a debate on the role of staff functions, such as risk management and
risk-adjusted returns. The case describes the risk assessment process in the corporate banking
arm of Wellfleet Bank around an illustrative business proposal in the corporate lending business
and illustrates the decision challenges faced.

Cardpe: Assessing the Market Potential in a Dynamic Payments Ecosystem in India, Harvard
Business School Publishing

Set in December 2016, the case follows Sumeet Mehta, CEO of Cardpe Services Private Ltd. when
they were all set to launch a mobile Point-of-Sale (mPOS) device that processed credit/debit card
payments. With the increased focus on digitalisation and Government measures promoting a
less-cash economy, this case explores the innovation adoption model and the challenges involved
in altering market behaviour; and devising a marketing strategy to overcome barriers involved in
product adoption.
