Type 2 Diabetes

DP, Health and Nutrition

What is Type 2 Diabetes?
Type 2 Diabetes used to be called Adult Onset Diabetes because it was unheard of in
youth. It makes your blood sugar levels higher than normal. When you have type 2
diabetes you can’t use the insulin your body produces correctly. Your pancreas
makes extra insulin to make up for it at first but then it gets overloaded and stops.
Glucose builds up in your blood instead of going into cells.

What are the causes?

“Some groups have a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes than others. Type 2
diabetes is more common in African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, and
Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders, as well as the aged population.” - American
Diabetes Association

Obesity, genetics, and lack of exercise, as well as lifestyle, all put people at higher risk
for type 2 Diabetes.
