Methods of Solving Equadratic Equations
This foldable can be used in an interactive notebook
or for students as a reference sheet.
• This foldable is designed to be copied two-sided. I suggest you make a sample copy
first to ensure the pages have printed properly to match the titles with the desired
solving method.
Foldable – 2 options:
• (pages 3 and 5) If students fold short sides to the center and then cut along the dotted lines
the title and Zero Product Property will be visible and can be glued into a notebook. If
students are gluing into a composition notebook a little trimming may be necessary to make
the title and Zero Product Property fit.
• (pages 3 and 4) Students fold short sides to the center and then cut along the dotted lines
and it is ready to be glued into a notebook.
Reference Sheet:
• If you would like to use as a reference sheet, simply copy single sided and 3-hole punch and
add to a binder.
EDITABLE
If you would like to use different equations page 7 is an editable page, simply type in your equations
and you can then print as either a foldable or reference page.
standard form,
and set equal to ❑ Solve by taking the
zero. square root of both
sides.
❑ Factor.
Remember you will have 2 roots.
❑ Set each factor
equal to zero and
solve.
Steps:
Steps: 4𝑥 2 − 5 = 3𝑥 𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 − 5 = 0
❑ Make sure the ❑ Isolate the 𝑥 2 and 𝑥
equation is in terms to one side.
standard form, and ❑ Find half of b,
Zero Product Property: For any real numbers a and b, if 𝑎𝑏 = 0, then either 𝑎 = 0, 𝑏 = 0, or both 𝑎 and 𝑏 equal zero.
Steps:
Steps: 4𝑥 2 − 5 = 3𝑥 𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 − 5 = 0
❑ Make sure the ❑ Isolate the 𝑥 2 and 𝑥
equation is in terms to one side.
4𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 − 5 = 0 𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 = 5
standard form, and ❑ Find half of b,
set equal to zero. 1 (the coefficient of x),
𝑎 = 4, 𝑏 = −3, 𝑐 = −5 𝑏 = 6; 6 = 3; 32 = 9 Square it, then
❑ Find the values of 2
Add the result to
a, b, and c.
𝑥=
−(−3) ± (−3)2 − 4(4)(−5) 𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 + 9 = 5 + 9 both sides.
❑ Use the 2(4)
2 ❑ Factor and simplify.
quadratic formula 𝑥+3 = 14
to solve for x. 3 ± 9 + 80 ❑ Take the square
𝑥= root of both sides.
8 𝑥 + 3 = ± 14 Remember you will have 2 roots
−𝑏 ± 𝑏2 − 4𝑎𝑐
𝑥=
2𝑎 3 ± 89 ❑ Solve for x.
𝑥= 𝑥 = −3 ± 14
The discriminant (𝑏 2 − 4𝑎𝑐) will tell
8
you how many and what kind of solutions 𝑥 = −3 + 14 and 𝑥 = −3 − 14
you will have. 3 89 3 89
