 Brief
Baoji Engineering Hydraulic Components Plant is a specialized
manufacturer in hydraulic products and a scientific type enterprise in
northwest of China. The plant was founded in 1993. From then on, in
order to meet the customer’s requirement, it has developed various
standard or non-standard hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, and various
hydraulic systems from middle-low to super-high pressure, and various
hydraulic stations, hydraulic machines and hydraulic test benches. It can
also design and manufacture various hydraulic components, hydraulic
systems and hydraulic machinery special needed by customer. The
quality system of plant is approved with ISO9001 certificates by China
Import and Export Commodities Quality Certificate Center.
The plant now has a staff of more than 100, and more than one third
among these are senior and semi-senior technicians with rich experience
in specialized work. It has 49 sets main equipment and various special
equipment to make hydraulic products, such as extended horizontal lathe,
extended horizontal grinder, oilstone grinder, hydraulic machine and test
devices. It has a capacity to design and manufacture hydraulic cylinders
which maximum bore diameter is 450mm, maximum stroke is 4m,
maximum working pressure 35MPa. The other products are hydraulic
system which maximum displacement is 250liter per minute, and
maximum working pressure is 35MPa. The advanced automatic
machining, refined quality system can ensure the products quality in
every process.
For many years, the various products of plant have been widely used
in the areas of oilfield, college factories, railway, mining, metallurgy, coal
and machine tool. They also completed with products of many
enterprises like oil drilling rig, single crystal furnace, rolling machine,
engineering truck, forklift and export hydraulic equipment. Its stable
quality and reliability are accepted by customers. It is certificated by
“High and New Technology Enterprises”.

Operation Manual for Hydraulic Cathead
Model YM-16IIF
I. Profile
The hydraulic cathead is a part of drilling rig. It is used with tongs in the
operation of making up and breaking out drill pipes, collars and casings.
Due to hydraulic drive, the output torque can be adjusted easily
according to the size of pipe. Compared with mechanical cathead, the
hydraulic cathead can reduce the driller’s working strength and drilling
cost and more safer.

III. Structure and Principle

1. Structure:

Control valve is with separated power source
2. Principle
Wind the cathead line on the tail of tongs; turn on the inlet and
outlet pipe of cylinder, operate the handle on the control valve to
extend the piston rod. Via the movable and fixed pulley, the

 operation of breaking out and making up can be finished by tongs to
rotate a fixed angle drawn by lines. When finished, operate the
handle to retract the piston rod. The swing spring makes the line
reset for the next operation.

IV. Operating Instruction

1. Installation
The cathead is considered the installation position and method in the
design of drilling rig.

2. Connection of cathead and tongs (See Fig.1)

a)Knot the stop-ring and spring on the line, then round the line end
and tie it up by line-clip, and connect it with the tail of tongs.

b)In the position of piston rod retracted completely and the tongs
begin to be drawn, the operator draw the other end of line and
make it straight, pass it through the hole of wedge and round it,
put the wedge into the circle, in the mean time, draw the end of
the line tightly as possible.

c)Make the tongs bite off the drill pipe (or fix the tail of tongs by an
other line), drive the cathead cylinder piston rod extend to make
the wedge tighter. If the length of line is not suitable, strike the
wedge out and readjust it, and cut the unnecessary line.

d)Push the spring to the baffle plate, compress it about 200mm to

the direction of cylinder and screw up the line-clip.

3. Operation
a) Turn on the hydraulic power source, adjust the overflow valve
according to the required torque of breaking out and making
up and the arm length of tongs to make the pressure gauge
reading equal to Chart I.

b) Operate the change valve to extend the piston rod to make the
line draw the tongs to finish the operation of breaking out and
making up. The piston rod would retract after finished the
operation.

c) The torque of breaking out and making up is the reading of

 pressure gauge. To get the accurate value, the piston rod
should extend, and the line is in 90 degree with tongs. Here,
the gauge displays the accurate valve. It is required for the
driller to operated the piston rod for several times.

d) Some residue air may be remain in the valve and hose in the
first installation. It can be get rid of by operating the control
valve to extend and retract the piston rod for several times.

V. Attention
1. When the piston rod reached the end of the travel, the driller
should operate the control valve to stop the oil supply at once.

2. The line pull chosen from Chart I must match the tongs rated
loads, otherwise it will be cause an accident.

3. When cathead is working, anyone must be far apart from the line
in case the line breaking.

4. The line should be replaced periodically after long service.

VI. Maintenance
1. After finished the operation every time, the piston rod should be
retracted completely to avoid the corroding spots that can damage
the seal rings. It is necessary to often check the round of the
piston rod for oil leakage. If there is any oil leakage, the operator

 should replace the seal rings and repair it.

2. The swing-spring of line which drawing the cathead should be

often greased, and should be checked periodically. If there is any
failure like bending, corrosion, worn, breaking or serious twisted
on the line, it should be replaced at once.

3. The operator should often check hi-pressure hose and joints for
leakage and worn and repair or replace it if necessary.

4. The operator should grease the nipples on the movable and fixed
pulley before working every day.

1. Guide for Maintenance and Purchase
1.1 General
YM-16ĊF Hydraulic Cathead is a special equipment backing up for drilling rig.
During the long term operation, effected by the ambient environments and
working condition of end user, the components on the equipment, to some extent,
shall be damaged and meet their days. In order to prolong the service life, we
provide a Maintenance Drawing Manual for YM-16ĊF Hydraulic Cathead in favor
of the end user to timely replace the damaged components.

1.2 Concerning the Drawing Manual

Including 3 pages

1.2.1 YM-16ĊF-00 General Assembly Drawing of Hydraulic Catheadˈin which some

assemblies and consumable parts are displayed in detail.

1.2.2 YM-16Ċ-00 Cathead Cylinderˈin which the cylinder and consumable parts are
displayed in detail.

1.2.3 YM-16ĊF-01.00 Control Valve Block in which the valve and consumable parts
are displayed in detail.

2. Attention
2.1 End user should operate the YM-16ĊF Hydraulic Cathead in accordance with the
Operational Manual.

2.2 Periodically grease the lubricating position, replace hydraulic oil within 1 months.

2.3 Remove the breakdown in accordance with the troubleshoot method stipulated in
the Operational Manual. Replace the damaged parts in accordance with the type
and description stipulated in the Maintenance Manual if the breakdown is failed to
remove.
