I. Course description:

This course is designed to provide the students with knowledge, attitudes and
skills, to apply it in practice for providing high quality of nursing care through
using of nursing process for provision of care for healthy and high risk women
during pregnancy, labor and delivery and postpartum as well as for newborn, and
women with gynecological problems.

Main Goal of the Maternity and Gynaecological Course:


Upon completion of this course, students will be competent, skillful and creative in
delivering high quality of nursing care for healthy and high risk women during
pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum as well as for newborns, and women
with gynecologic problems.

Course objectives:
A. Define common terms related to reproductive issues.
B. Contrast the structure and function of the external and internal female
genitalia organs.
C. Identify normal physiological changes that occur during pregnancy
D. Discuss normal fetal development from conception through birth.
E. Define the stages of labor
F. Explain phases of postpartum adaptations
G. Identify the common women’s health problems throughout the lifespan
H. Recognize the nursing management during pregnancy, labor and birth,
postpartum, and women with reproductive disorders.
I. Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills while discussing
various women’s health problems.

J. Assess needs, plan, and evaluate care, using the nursing process as a
framework
K. Provide holistic, evidence-based, culturally-appropriate, compassionate,
safe, and competent effective nursing care, that recognizes individual
preferences, age, values, and needs.
L. Develop effective communications skills while interacting with colleagues,
health care professionals, patients, and their families, to provide coordinated
patient care.
M. Utilize information technology in learning and care process
N. Review the ethical and legal issues that may arise when caring for women
and their families
O. Collaborate with colleagues and other health care professionals
P. Practice routine methods of investigation and research for a defined project
using up to date articles.

II. Clinical Objectives:

At the end of the clinical practice, student will be able to:


A. Obtain complete personal and obstetrical history accurately
B. Demonstrate complete physical assessment techniques for women during
antenatal period, natal and postnatal period
C. Demonstrate complete physical assessment techniques for women with
gynecological problems
D. Assess the parturient physical condition & the progress of process of normal
labor
E. Utilize evidence based practice and critical thinking skills in providing safe,
holistic maternity care

F. Utilizing nursing process in assessing, planning and implementing and
evaluating maternity care
G. Perform accurate medication dosage calculations for safe medication
administration
H. Provide appropriate health education and counselling according to the needs
of women.
I. Demonstrate proper assistance in delivery of newborn and placenta.
J. Apply universal infection control precautions & safety measures while
providing care to the women during antenatal, labor & postpartum,
Newborn, as well as women who have any gynecological problem.
K. Provide pre- and postoperative care for women with various gynecologic
operations
L. Recognize roles of major ward/department/unit nurse during child
bearing/rearing period
M. Use effective communication skills to interact with women, families, and the
interdisciplinary healthcare team.
N. Enhance working with a team a spirit

 The training on Maternity and Gynecologic Nursing skills will be
held in Saudi German Hospital, in the following areas:

 Newborn Unit

 5th ward

 6th ward

 OB clinic
