Learning Log 6
As an undergraduate taking a
graduate course, I do not know which grade level I will be placed at, so I decided to do a few
First Game:
Second grade- The first game I will discus is the game “Identifying coins: Couch Fishing” from
couch-fishing/. This game is a bare-bones review tool that I would not use to introduce the idea
of money and coin values. The content would probably work for first grade; however, it would
serve as a good way to reassure the class on the basics of money. It would go well with a lesson
centered around the second-grade math standard: 2.MDA.7 Solve real-world/story problems
involving dollar bills using the $ symbol or involving quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies using
the ¢ symbol.
Second Game:
The second game that I played and reviewed was “Identify the Text Features.” This game is a
quick way to wrap up a lesson about text features. It is not the most engaging game for the
students to play but the information that they need to know to finish the game is a good
replacement for an exit slip. It takes the student through a model piece of text and has them find
the corresponding text feature to the description that the narrator is giving.
Standard: 8.2 Use knowledge of appendices, timelines, maps, and charts to locate information
Third Game:
The next game that I selected corresponds to a fourth grade standard: 4.E.2B.1 Analyze and
interpret data from observations, measurements, and weather maps to describe patterns in local
and cloud types) and predict changes in weather over time. The game is called “Weather Report”
and it is one of my favorite games that I have found for this assignment. I like how in depth it is
regarding how a weather map would actually look. I also like the potential for pairing this with a
group activity where each student pretends to read each scenario as a meteorologist would. It
requires the students to call up their knowledge of what weather-related terms are and put them
on the map using the tools the game provides them. Link:

Fourth Game:
Another game that I tried out was called Executive Command” on iCivics
well in a fourth-grade class to cover Social Studies standard 4-4.2 Explain the structure and
function of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the federal government. This game
is an involved and engaging look at what being a president is like, and it comes with the stress of
keeping up with public approval. It is engaging enough to keep the attention of the class but I
think that having it pulled up on the board and working as a class while following the class’s
instructions while playing the game would be the best tactic because of how long this game
takes.
Fifth Game:
The final game for this learning log was also a fun one that scratches that fantasy itch that many
games like. It has a fantasy setting and the games mechanics are based around students’
knowledge of verbs. It could correlate to the second-grade standard 4.4 Form and use the past
tense of frequently occurring irregular verbs. It might become challenging to decipher what the
game is telling them to do, but the teacher explain how the game works could easily get around
most confusion. It requires the students to explore a cave and there are monsters and challenges
to face and the only way to get past them is to choose the correct verb.
