UNIT 1
MODULE

Overview
One of the most important outcome of teaching science are scientific attitudes. Scientific
attitudes enable us to think rationally. There are different qualities and virtues that reflects the
behavior and action of a person. Scientific attitude is being objecting in observation and thinking,
he/she is truthful in his/her thinking, objective in his/her observation and action and is free from
superstitious beliefs. (Gogoi, 2014).
Scientific research is done with patience and determination. Doing a research is not an easy
skill. Each research starts with a necessity that wonders the mind on how to solve it. Research is
not done overnight. It is done using a thorough investigation. As a researcher, you should possess
an attitude to get the research done. In this module, you will learn the different scientific attitude
and the importance of it.

Time allotment:
Motivation 20 minutes
Pre-Activity 40 minutes
Main Activity 60 minutes
Lecturette 60 minutes
Application 60 minutes
Evaluation 60minutes

At the end of this module, the learner is expected to:

1. Identify the different scientific attitudes.
2. Explain how scientific attitudes can help in doing a research
3. Apply scientific attitudes in designing simple science investigation

Instructions

1. Prepare two strips of paper towel between 1 and 2 inches wide. Tip: We used one
section of paper towel and folded it in half and then in half again until it was the correct
width.
2. Once you have your two paper towel strips ready, set them aside.
3. Next, Position your three empty glasses about 2-3 inches apart.
4. Pour water into the two outside glasses until they are halfway full. Leave the middle
glass empty.
5. Add a few drops of food coloring into the water. Stir the food coloring until the water
is all one color. Tip: Use blue food coloring in one glass and yellow in the other.
6. Before doing step 6, gather ideas of family members with you and record their
suggestions or ideas on what will happen to the experiment. Ask family members on
what to do to make the experiment successful. For example, trying it with glasses with
different distance which each other.
7. Take one of the strips of paper towel that you prepared in step 1. Place one end of the
paper towel into the glass with the blue water. Then place the other end into the glass
that is empty.
8. Take the other strip of paper towel that you prepared in step 1. Place one end of the
paper towel into the glass with the yellow water. Then place the other end into the glass
that is empty.
9. Observe the experiment right away. Do you notice that the water is “walking” up the
paper towel? Now, leave the glasses alone and come back to check on them in an hour
or two.
10. Return to the glasses and observe what has happened.

11. Next ,do the same process using 5 glasses.

Guide Questions:

1. Did the title of the activity spark your curiosity? What did are your first thoughts about the
title?
2. Make a table of the results of what happened to the activity. Try the activity using 3 glasses
and 5 glasses.
3. Include the suggestion and ideas of your family members on your recording of data.
Determine which ideas you tried which of the ideas you did not tr
