FLORES, EDITHA MARIE G.

BSN-III A3
SUMMARY
This journal published by Elsevier in the year 2016, aims to gain insight on the perspectives of student nurses
about their exposure to the community setting and how it has affected their learning and improvement in
practice. The inclusion criteria were students enrolled in the Baccalaureate of nursing and was exposed to the
neighborhood community setting. The participants were asked to submit a written narrative about their
experience as guided a template prepared by the researchers. Qualitative inductive content analysis was used to
analyze their 2-3 page accounts of their experiences. After analysis, they have come up with the following
themes:
 Uniqueness of placement experience
 Placement structure
 Time and resources to implement the intervention
 Clarity in the expectations for students and community support person
 Desired a registered nurse as a role model
They have then concluded that the neighborhood practice experience appears to be a valuable learning
experience for the student nurse and it has the capacity to enhance the CHN capacity in communities around the
world. Leaders learn to become leaders, develop group process skills and enhance their abilities to be self-
directed. They have also suggested that there should be a careful consideration in the idea of exposing students
in this type of learning environment for this serves as an alternative placement to advance student learning.

INSIGHTS
This journal truly lives up to what it has said. The community duty is one of the most exciting and meaningful
experiences of a student nurse. It does not only enhance your skills in terms of medical practice, but it enhances
your personality and it inculcates the value of leadership and group process skills. It was stated in the journal
that neighborhood community exposure requires a student to be innovative and creative in problem-solving and
relationship building, and as a student nurse studying here in the Philippines, I find it essential to be not only a
knowledgeable nurse but we must also practice ingenuity since the healthcare system here needs more
improvement and not all medical equipment are readily available.
I really look forward to having my duty in the neighborhood of Kapangan. I believe that this will be an avenue
for learning and lasting relationships. There is much more to learn beyond the confinement of the school and
hospital settings. There is so much more to learn and discover out there and to address this, a student nurse must
be free to do so in his or her community duty. 
