The Gasparilla Distance Classic Association is a not-for-profit organization dedi-
cated to raising funds for youth charitable organizations and running programs
in the Tampa Bay area. Since the first running of the Gasparilla Distance Classic in
Feb. 1978, as a direct result of the running events, $5.7 million has been donated
to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tampa, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay, The
Friends of Tampa Recreation, University of Tampa Cross Country & Track Program,
the Cigna Kids Running Program, Tampa Bay Area High School Athletic Programs,
various non-profit organizations and Tampa Bay area running related programs
for kids and adults.
The Gasparilla Distance Classic Association is also proud of its fundraising partner-
ships with St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Beat Nb, Joy FM’s Team Freedom, Nation-

USAA WARRIOR CHALLENGE
The Gasparilla Distance Classic Association and USAA take a great deal of pride in
recognizing those that currently serve or have served in the U.S. Military. In 2009,
USAA and the Association created the USAA WARRIOR CHALLENGE AWARD, a desig-
nation that on an annual basis, is awarded to the military branch that registers the
most participants combined in the 15K, 5K, Half Marathon and/or 8K.
In 2019, 2,845 active, retired and former military personnel participated in one or
more of the Race Weekend Running Events. With 1,000 registered participants, the
U.S. Army was the recipient of the 2019 USAA Warrior Challenge Award, with the U.S.
Air Force close behind with to at 914 participants.
USAA MILITARY CHALLENGE
The 2020 Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic Race Weekend
will once again include an individual military competition
in the15K, 5K, Half Marathon and 8K. The USAA Military
Challenge (see pg. 34) will be open to active, retired and
former personnel. Individual awards will be presented in
each distance:

PRE & POST-RACE MASSAGE
The Performance Massage Sports Massage Team will be
providing Post-Race Massage after the Publix Gasparilla
Distance Classic 15K & 5K and Publix Gasparilla Half Marathon & 8K. On both morn-
ings, the Team will offer 10-minute ($15) and 20-minute ($25) Post-Race Massages.
Pre-paying for massage is available through online registration ONLY at
RunGasparilla.com. (Rate applies to pre-paid massages only.)
The Team will also offer Pre-Race Massage during the 8 On Your Side Health &
Fitness Expo on both Fri. and Sat. during Expo Hours. For more information or to

RACE WEEKEND TIMING, PRESENTED BY GARMIN
Race participants will be timed utilizing the ChronoTrack B-Tag
Timing System developed and designed with RFID–radio fre-
quency identification. A timing tag will be placed on the back of each runner’s bib/
race number and SHOULD NOT be removed. Transponder pads at the Start, Finish
and along the race course will record the participant’s time for compiling the Tampa
Bay Times Race Results. For immediate Post-Race Results, a personalized QR Code
will be placed on the front of all Race Bibs/Numbers. By scanning the QR Code
(Smart Phone QR Code Reader app required), each finisher will receive their Start
Times and Net Times, as well as any splits that were recorded.
PGDC RACE WEEKEND PACE TEAMS
Pace Teams will once again be offered for the Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic
15K & 5K and Publix Gasparilla Half Marathon & 8K. For more information, please

On Monday, Feb. 24, the Tampa Bay Times will feature a Publix Gasparilla Distance
Classic Results Special Section that will include Race Weekend Coverage, Photos and
complete (but not Official) Age Group Results.
For those folks that live out of the Tampa Bay Area or aren’t Tampa Bay Times
subscribers, TBT-PGDC Race Results Special Section will be available (and mailed
to your home) for $5.

Spectators, family and friends (on-site or at home) can
electronically track multiple runners along the 15K, 5K, Half Marathon & 8K course
by receiving real-time updates via email and text messaging.
Updates will be received as runners cross checkpoints (will vary according to
distance), as well as at the Finish Line. Beginning Sat., Feb. 1, 2020, Garmin

The Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic 5K will feature five Wave Starts and a designat-
ed Start for the Kellogg’s 5K Stroller Roll and Kashi 5K Walk. Race Numbers will be
assigned according to each participants Projected Finish Time that was provided at
the time of registration. Runners and walkers should start in their correct Wave.

Wave Start #1: (30 min. & under) 9:15 a.m. – YELLOW WAVE/GREEN WAVE
5K Wave #1 will stage on Brorein St. 5K Runners with Seeded Numbers (YELLOW)
will access the front of the Start Area at the intersection of Brorein & Ashley St.
All others should enter the staging area (marked with GREEN barricade signage)
from barricade breaks on either side of Brorein Street.
Wave Start #2: (31 min. – 35 min.) 9:25 a.m. – BLUE WAVE
Wave #2 runners will stage on Brorein St. and should enter the staging area (marked
with BLUE barricade signage) from barricade breaks on either side of Brorein Street.
Once all Wave #1 runners have cleared the Start Area, the runners in Wave #2 will be
walked to the ‘official’ 5K Start Line at Brorein & Ashley St.
Wave Start #3: (36 min. – 40 min.) 9:35 a.m. – ORANGE WAVE
Wave #3 runners will stage on Brorein Street and should enter the staging area
(marked with ORANGE barricade signage) from barricade breaks on either side of
Brorein Street. Once all Wave #2 runners have cleared the Start Area, the runners in
Wave #3 will be walked to the ‘official’ 5K Start Line at Brorein & Ashley St.
Wave Start #4 (41 min. – 45 min.) 9:45 a.m. – PURPLE WAVE
Wave #4 runners will stage on Brorein Street and should enter the staging area
(marked with PURPLE barricade signage) from barricade breaks on either side of
Brorein Street. Once all Wave #3 runners have cleared the Start Area, the runners in
Wave #4 will be walked to the ‘official’ 5K Start Line at Brorein & Ashley St.
Wave Start #5 (46 min. – 50 min.) 9:55 a.m. – RED WAVE
Wave #5 runners will stage on Brorein Street and should enter the staging area
(marked with RED barricade signage) from barricade breaks on either side of Brorein
Street. Once all Wave #4 runners have cleared the Start Area, the runners in Wave #5
will be walked to the ‘official’ 5K Start Line at Brorein & Ashley St.
KELLOGG’S 5K STROLLER ROLL
Start Time: 10:05 a.m.
Kellogg’s 5K Stroller Roll participants will stage on Florida Ave.,
south of Brorein Street. Stroller Roll participants should enter the
staging area, (marked with Kellogg’s barricade signage) from barricade breaks on
either side of Florida Avenue. Once all of the Wave #5 runners have cleared the Start
Area, the 5K Stroller Roll participants will be allowed access and walked to the ‘offi-

PLEASE NOTE: If you intend to run the Half Marathon AND 8K on Sun., Feb. 23,
2020, you must register and complete an Entry Form for each event. Unless you

FACT: Obesity in children and adolescents is
a serious health issue with many health and
social consequences that often continue into
adulthood.
FACT: Children’s lives can be impacted in a
2020 fun and enjoyable way through interactive
fitness activities and the teaching of life skills
that will result in them living a more healthy
and balanced life.

In 2020, 350 4th — 8th Graders will be given the opportunity to train for participation in the
Publix Gasparilla Half Marathon and learn valuable life lessons at the same time. City of
Tampa Parks & Recreation Trained and Certified Staff will build Asset Rich Environments for
the Cigna Kids Running Program girls and boys. The kids will participate in an eight week
training program that will culminate with Race Weekend where they will run the final two
miles of the Half Marathon. Cigna Kids will also serve as volunteers for the Half Marathon
and experience “giving back to the community”.
