Lesson Idea Name: Linear Equations

Content Area: Foundations of Algebra
Grade Level(s): 9th Grade

Content Standard Addressed: MFA.EI.1 Students will create and solve equations and inequalities in one
variable. a. Use variables to represent an unknown number in a specified set. (MGSE.6.EE2,5,6) b. Explain
each step in solving simple equations and inequalities using the equality properties of numbers. (MGSE9-
12.A.REI.1) c. Construct viable arguments to justify the solutions and methods of solving equations and
inequalities. (MGSE9-12.A.REI.1) d. Represent and find solutions graphically. e. Use variables to solve real-
world and mathematical problems. (MGSE6.EE.7,MGSE7.EE.4)

Technology Standard Addressed: Creative Communicator Students communicate clearly and express
themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital media
appropriate to their goals.

Selected Technology Tool: Popplet

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This lesson will involve the use of both Popplet and Kahoot! to help deliver instruction and assess student
understanding. Instructions for the lesson will be provided verbally as well as written on the board for
students to refer back to if needed. There will multiple ways of engagement by using two different tools for
student interactions. The Popplet will allow students to work in pairs and share their ideas based on what
they learned from the previous lesson and see how they all connect to each other. Students will also be
creating a word problem involving linear equations which will activate higher levels of thinking. Finally,
Kahoot! is a great way to engage students in friendly competition as well as assess their progress. There will
multiple ways of action and expression as students have the creative freedom of how they will create and
design their Popplet. Students will also be free to choose what the variables in their word problem are as well
as making it their own, based on their own life experiences and how they mathematize the world.

Lesson idea implementation:

This lesson will involve the use of both Popplet and Kahoot! to help deliver instruction and assess student
understanding. Popplet will be the main portion of the lesson where students will pair up and based on what
was learned about linear equations the previous lesson to construct their own Popplet. While the students
are doing this, the teacher will walk around the classroom, monitoring students to ensure they are meeting
the requirements of have at least 4 stems from the topic of linear equations, two sub stems per topic, and
one question to contribute to the end of class Kahoot! The Popplet section of class should take about 30-40
minutes. Once each pair’s Popplet is created, they will share their question they created with me, so that I am
able to add it to our end of class Kahoot! The Kahoot! should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.

Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)
Student learning will be assessed through the collaborative Kahoot! quiz and will show me what students
are still struggling with as well as what they have mastered. The differentiation in the lesson will be based on
the varying levels of difficulty that each pair makes their question as well as students being paired for their
activity. I will extend student learning by offering extra credit to students who do more stems on their Popplet
or who make more than one question if time allows them to. Immediate feedback will be provided through
the Kahoot! if the student got it correct or incorrect.

Reflective Practice:
Creating a Popplet will impact student learning by having students recall information presented to them
from days prior and organize that information as they see fit. This will show students how their peers may
think of the information as well as strengthen their own thoughts and understanding of what was taught. By
having students create their own word problem, they are tasked with a higher level of thinking which will be
beneficial in their thought processes when they must break down future word problems to solve. With these
problems they have created going into a collaborative Kahoot! students will be able to see how their peers
thought of the question and will see a variety of different wordings to break down to see what the question
may be asking.
