ENGINEERING SURVEYS WITH COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

RATIONALE

The DPWH Design Guidelines, Criteria and Standards (DGCS) 2015 Edition has been prepare
to update the previous guidelines published in 1984. The new guidelines present significant
revision in engineering surveys. The significant changes were results of equipment
upgrades, introduction of new survey methodology, changes in survey requirements of the
National Mapping and Resources Information Authority (NAMRIA), ISO Requirements and
technology trends.

The new guidelines contain requirements and methodologies that might be new to most
surveyors and survey engineers of the implementing offices. It was also noted in the survey
equipment inventory of the Regional and District Office that almost all the implementing
offices have their total stations and some are having GPS Equipment in their respective
offices. However, it was observed during the design audit that most of the survey data
presented were written in field books. This setup is an indication that the total station is not
being used as total station but as a theodolite or transit, the old survey instrument. This is
only one of the observations of this office that we find it necessary and timely to propose a
training on Field to Finish Surveying.

This training will not only comply the requirements and criteria in the newly design
guidelines but will also support the training of the design engineers since the basic inputs of
the design software being used by the department were point data with grid coordinates.
This data can only be efficiently and effectively done by the new methods of surveying being
discussed in the new guidelines. The training also ensures that the survey productivity of the
Implementing Office can be increased by at least 100% than the current or conventional
method of surveying.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the training, the participants are expected to:

1. Understand the survey requirements and standards based in the new DPWH Design
Guidelines Criteria and Standards
2. Conduct control surveys for road projects
3. Conduct topographic survey using description keys and figure prefix system
4. Conduct topographic survey using Real Time Kinematic (RTK) Method
5. Conduct utility surveys using GPS
6. Import and process data from a field notebook or controller to a design software

7. Edit survey data using survey module of the design software

8. Prepare surface, cross sections and profile from survey points to an accurate and ready
to design format

METHODOLOGIES

The methodologies to be employed in the seminar-workshop will be classroom discussions

and on-field training. The classroom discussions will focus on requirements and
methodologies of preliminary surveying while on-field training will supplement this
requirement. The class will be divided into four (4) groups during the on-field training and
will be tasked to survey a maximum of one (1) kilometer of road using total station and/or
GPS Equipment. The training will be followed by processing the survey data taken during the
on-field survey.

PARTICIPANTS

The participants to the seminar are engineers of the DPWH who are directly involved in the
conduct of engineering surveys in their respective offices. There will be a maximum of forty
(40) participants per batch. The participants must be computer literate and knowledgeable
in Basic AutoCAD.

RESOURCE PERSONS

DPWH Engineers with expertise on modern surveying using total stations, GPS equipment
and digital level. Engineers outside DPWH can also be tapped as resource persons in this
seminar.

EQUIPMENT

During the on-field training three (4) units each of total stations, GPS Equipment and Digital
Level and Twenty (20) units of laptops installed with AutoCAD Civil 3D 2017. The laptops
should be provided individually by the participants but the trial version of the software shall
be installed by the IT prior to the training.

DURATION/VENUE

The seminar will be conducted for five (5) days inclusive of one (1) day on-field training.
The venue for the classroom discussions and data processing will be audio visual room and
able to connect the laptops of the participants for power supply. The site during the on-field
training is preferable done in an oval or a large park where the participants will be able to
propose a sample strip of road.

RECOGNITION
Certificate of training will be given to participants who will successfully complete the training
course.
