Problem Set 1

Instruction: Solve the following problems 1 to 7 and show the solutions. (Include your name and section
at the upper left hand corner of your answer sheet.)

1. A student is chosen at random to represent a class with 5 freshman, 4 sophomores, 8 juniors,


and 3 seniors. Find the probability that a student is: (4 pts.)
a) A sophomore b) a junior or a senior
2. In a toss of two dice, what is the probability of (4 pts.)
a) getting less than 4 and greater than 2? b) getting a 7 or an 11?
3. One card is selected at random from 25 cards numbered 1 to 25. Find the probability that the
number on the card (is): (4 pts.)
a) ends in the digit 2 b) even and divisible by 3
4. Suppose a student is selected at random from 80 students where 30 are taking Mathematics, 20
are taking English and 10 are taking Mathematics and English. Find the probability that the
student is taking Mathematics (M)or English (E). (3 pts.)
5. Two fair dice, one red and the other white are rolled. Find the probability of NOT obtaining the
same faces. (3 pts.)
6. In two tosses of a die, find the probability of obtaining an odd number on the first toss and
at most a 2 on the second toss? ). (3 pts.)
7. In a single deck of cards, three cards are drawn in succession, what is the probability that a jack,
a king and a queen are drawn respectively if replacement is not allowed? ). (3 pts.)

8. A bag contains 5 red and 3 white balls. What is the probability of getting 3 red balls?
9. An urn contains 2 blue and 2 green marbles. Two balls are drawn at random. Find the probability
p they are a match (same color).
